Former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan passed away in Gurugram, having been on a ventilator after testing COVID positive. He was also serving as a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government under Yogi Adityanath having served Delhi and Districts Cricket Association DDCA president, vice-president and chief selector previously.

“Early morning today, Chetan ji had kidney failure and subsequently, had a multi-organ failure. He is currently on life support. We are all praying that he wins this battle,” a senior DDCA official, who is keeping track of the development, had told PTI on Saturday. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it.

One of Indian cricket’s most prolific names in the 70s and 80s, Chetan Chauhan made his mark as an opener alongside Sunil Gavaskar. He also became the first cricketer to complete 2,000 runs in Test cricket without registering a century. In 40 Test matches for the country, he scored 2,084 runs which includes 16 half-centuries and had a best score of 97.

He had a prolific scoring record at the domestic level representing Delhi and Maharashtra, which made him quite a prolific figure in the DDCA circles. He had 11,143 runs at an average in excess of 40 in 179 First-class games. He moved into politics later on and was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Amroha constituency. He was currently in charge of the sports and youth ministry in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Tributes pour in from the cricketing world

Former cricketing greats remembered Chauhan as a gritty opener who did well on the trickiest of surfaces. Former Indian captain Anil Kumble remembered the conversations which he had with the man during the 2007/08 tour of Australia, one which turned out to be memorable for India. Plenty of tributes came in from the political world as well, who acknowledged his service in the last few years.

Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi said, “Shri Chetan Chauhan ji distinguished himself as a wonderful cricketer and later as a diligent political leader. He made effective contributions to public service and strengthening the BJP in UP. Anguished by his passing away, condolences to his family and supporters.
