WSL Matchweek 1 Roundup: Chelsea held by Man United while Arsenal off the mark with six

The Women’s Super League (WSL) is one of the most premium top flight league in Women’s Football. The league was called off last season due to the Novel Coronavirus and Chelsea were declared champions. The most anticipated league in Women’s football kicked off again on 5th September and the WSL produced some great games over the weekend. Let us glance at the top 3 results of the WSL opener.

#1. Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea

The Red Devils are presumed to be the only team who could possibly breach into the traditional top 3. Emma Hayes’ Chelsea who are billed as potential champions again. The Blues travelled to the Leigh Sports Village for the biggest match of the gameweek.

Casey Stoney’s Manchester United were under pressure from kickoff. The Blues scored after 25 minutes through Sam Kerr and kept on creating chances until the end of the first half. Kerr missed multiple chances to give the visitors a two goal advantage.

Manchester United started the second half with great aggression and high pressing. Jackie Groenen came on to give the hosts a massive quality boost in the second half which resulted in a fast and crisp counter attack by the Red Devils as the Dutch international’s killer pass was tapped in by Leah Galton to level the scores.

The game ended pretty much end-to-end with Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps making multiple saves. The game ended 1-1 draw for her team against Chelsea, who were understandably disappointed to drop points in the first game itself. Seemed like Casey Stoney’s plan against Emma Hayes worked after all.

#2. Arsenal 6-1 Reading

The Gunners who finished third last season entered this game as clear favorites and they made it a point to show that on the pitch. A hat-trick by Jill Roord which was the 31st in the history of WSL was the highlight. It was backed up by a brace by their star Vivianne Miedema and a good goal by Kim Little.

Arsenal sent a shiver down the spine of the Reading defense in almost every attack. The only blemish in the Gunners’performance was the late goal conceded by them which was scored by Danielle Carter, a former Arsenal player. The huge margin of victory sent Arsenal at the top of the table.

#3. Aston Villa 0-2 Manchester City

Manchester City traveled to Villa Park to take on last season’s Championship winners Aston Villa. The result was never in doubt since the 6th minute as 21-year old Georgia Stanway scored the first of her two goals in the half to put the team in cruise control in the first half. Aston Villa never really looked into the game in the first half.

The second half was an even encounter with the newly promoted hosts pushing to get a goal or two against the potential title challengers. Man City could only fashion a chance or two in the second half but were eventually able to hold on to get a two goal victory. The Citizens started their title challenge in style.

Results elsewhere in the WSL:

Bristol City 0-4 Everton

Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 Birmingham City
