The IPL is only 8 days away and the excitement is mounting. Preparations are in full swing and players are toiling in the nets. In today’s article, we will explore a team that hasn’t tasted any success throughout the history of the IPL. It’s the team from the capital of the country. Known as the Delhi Daredevils earlier, it is known as Delhi Capitals now.

For those of you who have been following the IPL since its inception, the Delhi team reminds you of veterans of the game such as Virender Sehwag and Glenn McGrath. Of the times when the Nawab of Najafgarh opened with Gautam Gambhir and rained sixes. This period was followed by a few seasons when Chris Morris single-handedly carried the team. But all in all, the team has never been a title contender, as it has always lacked either quality or balance across departments.

The re-branding from Daredevils to Capitals changed many things. The entire squad underwent a transformation. The dead-weight was unloaded and a fresh squad was formed. The transformation has infused the team with youngsters from the game. The best thing about this aspect is that the most promising Indian youngsters have been picked. Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant to name a few. Added to this is the overseas young talent like Kagiso Rabada who has proven his worth in IPL 2019.

Ironically, too much young talent has also proven to be a disadvantage. The lack of experience was quite visible in the last season, with Shikhar Dhawan and Chris Morris being the only experienced players. However, the team has tried to address this problem during this year’s auction. Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin have been picked this year. The team seems to have a good balance. But it would be interesting to see how they line-up.

Here’s our take on the possibilities:

The Opening Pair: Since a right-hand/left-hand opening combination is always desirable, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw will be the most likely opening pair for the Capitals. Ajinkya Rahane is also a possibility, but due to his low average strike rate of 121.92, he won’t most likely be preferred.

The Middle Order: Ajinkya Rahane will be sent at number 3 most probably. Apart from him, the middle order will mostly consist of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis. Thus, the Delhi Capitals have plenty of batting options. There will probably be an occasional inclusion of Hetmyer in place of Stoinis. But considering the all-round capabilities of Stoinis, he will certainly be the go-to option. Alex Carey will the wicketkeeper for the team.

The Bowling Department: The pace attack will most probably be spearheaded by Ishant Sharma and Kagiso Rabada. Ravichandran Ashwin will lead the spin department. With one place still remaining, it will be interesting to see who is picked up as there are three more spin options. The contestants for the place will be the veteran Amit Mishra, Axar Patel and the Nepali prodigy Sandip Lamichhane. Considering that Axar Patel can bat, in good batting conditions he can be picked to provide depth in batting. On turning pitches, Sandip Lamichhane will be the preference.

What playing eleven decisions will ‘Punter’ finally take? Will Delhi Capitals finally find a successful recipe for winning the IPL this season? Only time will answer these questions. Until then , stay tuned.
