The clock is ticking. Just 7 days to go for the IPL now. In today’s article we explore one of the most successful but controversial teams from South India. The one with the famous ‘Whistle Podu’ song and led by the cool ‘Thala’. Yes, it’s the Chennai Super Kings.

This team has won the IPL thrice, but faced a ban due to some illicit practices by its owners. However, it can back strong, keeping its identity intact. MSD was still the captain. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina were retained. Till date, most of the skeleton of the team is unchanged.

Let’s analyse how they would line-up this season. The team has a lot of veterans of the game like M.S Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh. However, citing personal reasons Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina have withdrawn from this year’s IPL. Now let’s analyse each department of the team.

The Opening Pair: With Faf Du Plessis and Watson in the team, this will be the most likely opening combination. However, considering that there is a limit to the number of foreign players in the team, CSK might also go for an opening combination of Watson/Rayudu or Du Plessis/Rayudu. It would also be interesting to see whether Murali Vijay gets to play. If he does, he would also be a contender for the opening spot.

The Middle Order: The Super Kings don’t seem to have a plenty of dedicated quality batsmen in the middle order. Barring a few, most of them are all-rounders. Considering that Watson and Du Plessis open, the middle order will be composed mostly of Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, M.S Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. With the form of the veterans uncertain, it won’t be surprising if the middle order struggles. It is a no-brainer who the wicket-keeper will be.

The Bowling Department: This is going to be an interesting one. CSK has plenty of options in the bowling department. The spin department will be headed by Imran Tahir and Jadeja. In case Tahir doesn’t get to play, Karn Sharma or Piyush Chawla will be the replacing players. Tahir can also be replaced by Mitchell Santner. Deepak Chahar will definitely play. One out of Sam Curran and Lungi Ngidi will get the spot. Shardul Thakur will also be picked.

Overall, it is really difficult to predict who will be the playing 11 for CSK. With so many options available, it will be a difficult pick. The best tactic will be to experiment with different combinations for the first few games. This will give a pretty clear idea as to what will be an effective combination.

The opening game against Mumbai Indians will be a tough one. Fleming has been able to be an effective coach until now and CSK fans should have no problem in trusting that their coach will come up with a winning formula. That’s all from us today. ‘Whistle Podu’ until next time.
