A Brief on the Kings XI Punjab – The King in the North

With just a few days to go for the most awaited cricketing event of the year, today we will have a look at the team owned by the gorgeous Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. Yes it’s the Kings XI Punjab. The team was once full of stars. The likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Yuvraj Singh, Brett Lee, Chanderpaul shared the dressing room. However KXIP ‘s performance in the IPL hasn’t justified the presence of these big names.

Since the past few years, Maxwell and Miller have saved the team from a lot of shame. With K.L Rahul and Chris Gayle in the team, things are certainly looking up. Let’s see what they have in store for the upcoming season.

#1. The Opening Pair:

K L Rahul and Chris Gayle will most likely be the opening pair for the Kings. Another possible combination can be Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle. But both of these combinations are equally good. If KL Rahul and Chris Gayle get going , there is nothing like it. Even Mayank Agarwal is a good batsman having an IPL career strike rate of 128 and a strike rate of 140 in IPL 2019.

#2. The Middle Order:

Assuming that Chris Gayle and KL Rahul will open for the Kings, the middle order will be composed of Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran, Mandeep Singh, Karun Nair and Glenn Maxwell. It would be interesting to see of either of Deepak Hooda or Karun Nair get the place in the playing XI. Nicholas Pooran will be the definite keeper.

In the absence of Pooran, KL Rahul can also keep the wickets. Also Sarfaraz Khan is a good batting option provided he is in good form. However, he has proven to be highly over-rated in the past and will have to fight for his spot. Neesham is a good all-round option. So overall, KXIP has plenty of batting options and players will try their best to get a spot in the playing XI. However after so many years, the absence of David Miller will be felt.

#3. The Bowling Department:

KXIP does not have a lot of quality spin options in their team. K Gowtham, Afghan Mujeeb Ur Rehman and Murugan Ashwin are the spin options for the team. However, there are plenty of pace options for the team. The pace attack will be spearheaded by Mohammad Shami. Chris Jordan, Sheldon Cottrell and Hardus Viljoen can be the partnership options. There will be a healthy competition among the overseas players for the spot.

With Gayle, Pooran and Maxwell almost certain to get a spot, the remaining spot will be open for rotation among Mujeeb, Cottrell, Viljoen, Neesham and Viljoen. The selection will be mostly based on the pitch conditions and requirements. Some young faces like Harpreet Brar ( spinner) , Arshdeep Singh and Darshan Nalkande can be expected to play a few matches.

Overall, the balance of batsmen, bowlers and all rounders is quite good. However, a lot of players haven’t been in consistent form. It would be a surprise of this team manages to enter the play-offs. With other teams having such strong line-ups KXIP will have to be at their best . The team will have to experiment for the first few matches to come up with a consistently performing team. That would be critical for their success. A lot of things will unfold once the tournament begins. Until then, ‘Chak De Phatte’.
