Former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor completes transfer to Odisha FC


34 year-old defender Steven Taylor joins Odisha FC from Wellington Phoenix

Indian Super League club Odisha FC has signed Wellington Phoenix captain Steve Taylor. English centre back has agreed a short termed one year contract with Bhubaneshwar based outfit. Odisha FC has also added an option to extend for another year.

Steven Taylor started playing football as striker then turned into a centre back. He joined Newcastle United through the ranks of Academy in 2003. Taylor went on to make 215 appearances for the magpies in 13 years of stay. He joined New Zealand based A-League side Wellington Phoenix after short stints in MLS and League One. Taylor made 49 appearances for Wellington Phoenix and also scored three goals. He was appointed as the captain of the club for 2019-20 season. Wellington finished on third position under his captaincy.

Club already completed major moves by adding Hyderabad FC captain Marcelinho and last season loanee Manuel Onwu in the rosters. Steve Taylor is among the list of new foreign faces transfers. Taylor will get company of 26 year old former Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory player, Jacob Tratt in central defense. Duo will add the Australian flavour and toughness in Odisha’s defense. Brazilian forward Delgado Mauricio will add fire power in side’s attacking capabilities.

Odisha FC fans have high expectations from their new head coach Stuart Baxter. British manager aims to bring fresh tempo with fresh foreign faces for 2020-21 season. Baxter replaced Spaniard Josep Gombau who managed for club’s debut ISL season after change in base. Baxter previously managed the national side of South Africa from 2017 to 2019.

Departure of familiar faces

Odisha FC recently parted ways with six foreigners who were important figures in club’s outfit. List includes the names of goalkeeper Francisco Dorronsoro, defender Carlos Delgado, striker Aridane Santana and midfielder Marcos Tebar, Martin Perez Guedes and Xisco Hernandez. Club did not intend to offer extensions after completion of their contracts. Spanish duo of Xisco Hernandez and captain Marcos Tebar were quite popular among Odisha fans.

Odisha managed to make some interesting moves during the transfer window. Club showed trust and focus on the Indian talents which are proven treasures. Odisha’s Indian Super League 2020-21 campaign will be very exciting to witness.
