Arsenal Women have made only one recent attacking signing, Caitlin Foord in January 2020, who did not even have the chance to display her talent in the previous season. But faith in the attack of the Arsenal Women has always been high. The Arsenal frontline consists of a well bonded group of players who have represented the club for multiple seasons now.

Goal Scorers- Arsenal Women

Vivianne Miedema

Vivianne Miedema is the star of the Arsenal team. She won the Football Writer’s Association (FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year award for the 2019-20 season, and also the Golden Boot for both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 FA Women’s Super League (WSL) season. Beth Mead and Danielle Van de Donk who play as wingers and / or inverted wingers support Miedema with assists and goals. While her finishing, close control and speed are in the spotlight, Miedema’s hold up play is not spoken of enough. She can effectively fend off defenders and feed the ball to runners, whether running inwards towards the goals or down the wings. Statistics back up her ability to set up goals as well. Miedema ended with the most number of assists for the Arsenal Women in the 2019-20 season.

Support Players

Jill Roord can be the one opposition teams lose sight of, and concede goals to. She forges a formidable partnership with her Dutch compatriots Miedema and Van de Donk. Also adding to the attack are the wing backs Lisa Evans and Katie McCabe, who are both originally wingers. These two are tasked with charging up and down the wings to support both attack and defense. This may change with the signings of full backs Steph Catley and Noëlle Maritz, but is yet to be seen with only one match played so far.

Midfield Controllers

Now to the most underrated players of the team, Kim Little and Jordan Nobbs. These two will go down as legends of the club without doubt. Both Kim and Jordan have 200 plus appearances for the Arsenal Women Football Club. If any tag were to be assigned to these two, it would be that of versatility. Jordan has played as a central midfielder as well as a winger. Kim has the technical ability and positioning skills to dictate play as well as get into attacking positions. Lia Walti, the Swiss central midfielder has a great role to play in terms of stopping opposition attacks and maintaining pressure on them. Walti’s work off the ball allows Little and Nobbs to control the midfield in possession.

There is another secret to Arsenal’s attacking play, not a very well kept one though. Central defender Leah Williamson, formerly a midfielder, is known for notoriously good passes from deep to set up the team’s attack.

Statistics (Goals and Assists) of Arsenal Women

Statistics may mislead one to believe that Miedema does all the work. Truth be told, the numbers are well split between the other attackers, both in terms of goals and assists. Miedema finished with 16 goals (47% of the total) and 8 assists (32% of the total) in the previous season which ended prematurely. There were still 7 games remaining before the pandemic forced the league to award the title to Chelsea Women. Van de Donk, Mead and Little scored a combined 15 goals (44% of the total) with 5 goals each. Evans and Van de Donk finished with 4 assists each and Mead with 3.

This Arsenal team will be hungry for success as the previous season ended without any trophies. Also, some much needed additions to boost the size of the squad have been made. Wing backs Catley and Maritz, and Malin Gut in midfield will add to the outfield players.

With a replenished squad, all eyes are on the Arsenal team to repeat the success of the 2018-19 season in the FA Women’s Super League.
