IPL 2020: Chennai Super Kings Beat Mumbai Indians By 5 Wickets

The festival of India is back and it starts off with a bang as the top two teams in the League clash against each other. Chennai Super Kings were desperate to find a win against Mumbai Indians as they lost all their games against them in the previous edition of IPL.

For Mumbai Indians, their past was lingering around as they have lost their 7 previous opening matches and have been labelled slow starters as they lost this match as well and now are 8-0 as they have lost all their opening games since 2013 in the Indian Premier League.

To start of Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first, Mumbai Indians with the bat had one of the finest starts as Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma lead the way.Rohit Sharma departed for just 12 runs as once again a leg-spinner was the cause of his demise and on this instance, it was Piyush Chawla who claimed his wicket who was bowling for the first time in the Yellow Jersey.

The pressure came back on the MI batsmen as both their openers departed in quick succession and the onus was then taken up by Saurabh Tiwary and Suryakumar Yadav as they formed a partnership and prevented the further fall of wickets. Yadav tried to accelerate his scoring rate but could not manage to do as he lost his wicket in the process.

Once Yadav departed, Hardik Pandya came on to the crease and he seemed itchy to get on to bat as he was out from the cricketing action for almost a year and made his presence felt by hitting a couple of sixes but unfortunately, could not manage to stay in for long as he departed for 14(10).

MI’s highest scorer was Saurabh Tiwary who scored 42(31). Both the batsman had to walk back into the dugout due to a couple of absolute screamers by Faf du Plessis at the boundary rope. Towards the end of the innings MI’s batting just faulted through as it looked like they were following the plan of hit out or get out and in the end were restricted to a score of 162/9.

CSK were in pursuit and did not have the best of starts to the chase as MI’s opening bowlers looked threatening Trent Boult lead the attack for Mumbai Indians and plucked the wicket of Shane Watson in the first over and following Boult was James Pattinson who got the ball talking and claimed the wicket of Murali Vijay.

CSK seemed to be in a bit of a pickle. However, Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis stayed on for a long hall and decided to get their side back on track as the MI spinners were unable to get their wickets in the middle overs and create pressure on the CSK batsmen.

Rayudu and du Plessis managed to stitch a partnership of 115 runs between them and got CSK closer to the target, Rahul Chahar managed to get Ambati Rayudu wicket who made 71(48) balls.

Once Rayudu departed everyone felt that they will finally get to see MS Dhoni at the batting crease but Dhoni had other plans as he promoted Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran above him, Curran played a cameo as he scored a quickfire 18(6) which helped CSK get closer to the victory.

After Curran departed everyone finally got a glimpse of MS Dhoni as remained not out alongside Faf du Plessis who scored 58*(44) till then end and saw their side through for their victory against MI in the opening game of IPL 2020.

In the post-match presentation, MS Dhoni applauded the individuals who have been part of IPL.

Match 2 of IPL 2020 will be played today between the Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab at 7:30 PM IST.
