NBA Eastern Conference Finals – Miami Heat vs Boston Celtics – Game 3

Going into Game 3, the Miami Heat won both Game 1 and Game 2 of the series against Boston Celtics by fine margins. The 0-2 deficit does not paint the best picture of the Boston Celtics’ performance in the series up until this point. The starting 5 had been consistent for Boston across both games but were narrowly edged out in both games by the Heat.

The Celtics needed to avoid a third consecutive loss at all costs. The Celtics did just that. They edged out the Heat by double digits, 11 points to be exact. The game finished 117-106 in Boston’s favor.

Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown scored 20 plus points each. The four combined for a total of 92 points. Gordon Hayward was available for Game 3 after a month out due to an ankle sprain. Hayward managed to play an astonishing 31 minutes off the bench. His output was 6 points and 4 assists. The entire Celtics bench contributed 17 points to the tally. Kemba Walker scored 12 out of his 21 points from beyond the arc. The Celtics could definitely do with some more of Walker’s 3-pointers.

Bam Adebayo was the Heat’s star man for the game. He scored 27 points (10 more than the second-highest among the starters for the Heat) and also had 16 rebounds. The rest of the starting 5 combined for a paltry 51 points. The reason why the Heat ended the game with only an 11-point gap was Tyler Herro’s performance off the bench. Herro amassed 22 points in 36 minutes, but most of it came in the first half. They sorely missed Dragić’s Game 1 performance.

How the game progressed

The Celtics started the game as they had Game 1 and 2. They led at the end of the first quarter by 9 points, and by 13 points at the end of the first half. Tyler Herro’s performance in the first half kept the deficit for the Heat down to 13 points, considering how poor they were in the offense. The Heat tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter and went on an 11-1 run. The Celtics managed to curb the comeback by the Heat and maintain the lead at the end of the third in Game 3. The Heat did cut the lead down to just 5 points in the fourth quarter, but could not see their comeback through.

It was clear to see for everyone that the Celtics had a better field goal percentage (FG%) than the Heat. The Celtics had an FG% of 48.2% whereas the Heat secured only 38.8%. For all the plaudits received for the Heat’s 3-point shooting in Game 2, they disappointed by scoring only in 4 out of 26 attempts at 3-pointers in the second half.

Every game is proving to be a closely contested one in this Conference Finals. With the Heat 2 wins away from the NBA Finals, and the Celtics hot on their heels, we are in for an exciting few games next.
