Devdutt Padikkal – The shining Debutant

Devdutt Padikkal started an amazing debut game scoring 56 runs of 42 balls with a strike rate of 133.33 in the first IPL game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Padikkal was a part of the RCB team last season but he didn’t get a chance to play. But this year he got his 1st chance opening for RCB. The last player to score a half century on an IPL debut was Sam Billings back in 2016. Devdutt became a key player in the RCB vs. SRH game where he helped RCB to gather a better run target.

Background

Devdutt was born on 7th July 2000 in Kerala. Devdutt Padikkal is a left-handed batsman who starts in the top order and also bowls off-spin. He started his cricketing career playing for the Karnataka cricket club for the first time. His father was always a cricket fan and he spotted his son holding a bat at just the age of 3. So his father shifted from Karnataka to Bangalore in a hope that he can get a good cricket opportunity. Naseerudin, Devdutt’s coach spotted him batting at the nets when he realized that he had a talented kid training under him. He got trained at the Karnataka Institute of Cricket.

Domestic Career

In 2017, he was selected by Bellary Tuskers in the Karnataka Premier League. Padikkal provided a great impact in the Karnataka Premier League.  He gave an amazing performance on his debut game in the Ranji Trophy against Maharashtra. He smashed an extraordinary 72 against the Bengaluru Blasters. The lad scored 77 runs in his debut game of Ranji Trophy. He made his List A debut in 2019 for Karnataka in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy where he was the leading run scorer of the tournament scoring a massive 609 runs in 11 matches. He scored 58 runs in the opening game of Vijay Hazare Trophy against Jharkhand. There was no stopping for the player as he a century in the next match against Goa in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Considering his key scoring abilities, he was named in India’s A squad for the Deodhar Trophy. Devdutt made his 20-20 debut on 8th November 2019 for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

He has a record of scoring 580 runs in 12 T20 matches at an average of 64.44 with a strike rate of 175.75.

Padikkal represented India in the Under-19 after performing his part for the Karnataka Ranji Trophy side.

He was selected in the Indian team for the U-19 Asia Cup. The left hander scored 183 runs in 4 matches with an average of 45.75 with a top score of 121 against UAE in Bangladesh.

IPL career

Seeing his extraordinary performance, Padikkal was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a price of 20 lacs in the 2019 IPL auction. He has scored a total of 907 runs so far.

Devdutt finally got a breakthrough by starting for his home side, Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 1st IPL 2020 match against Sunrisers. Devdutt can get a great experience by batting alongside players like Virat Kohli, de Villers, Finch and Parthiv Patel.

With a great performance in the very first game itself, we will hope that Devdutt Padikkal gets more opportunities in the upcoming matches to prove his talent.
