Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones, who was with Star Sports for the on-going Indian Premier League (IPL), passed away in Mumbai after a sudden cardiac arrest. Jones was commentating on the Mumbai-Kolkata game just yesterday and was slated to work today as well, before the unfortunate news broke in.

One of the finest batsmen of his times, Jones had a prolific record in international cricket across both formats, scoring over 9,000 runs at an average in excess of 45. Just a few weeks ago, his outstanding double century against India completed 24 years. That Test match is not just remembered for being one of the two tied Tests, but also for the heroics of a classy Australian cricketer. He was also a part of the 1987 World Cup-winning team.

The current generation cricket fans remember him fondly for his expert analysis on television. His sense of humor, banters during talk shows, astute analysis of the game and most importantly, his ability to connect with the audience played a major role in making him an integral figure in people’s cricket-watching experience.

Star Sports, the broadcasting company in charge of IPL telecast, confirmed the news in a statement, also mentioning that they were working with Australian authorities to make necessary arrangements. “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr. Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements,” Star Sports’ statement read.
