For Match 5 of the Indian Premier League Dinesh Karthik and the Kolkata Knight Riders took on the Rohit Sharma lead Mumbai Indians. For KKR, this was their first match for the tournament. MI were unchanged for this match.

Rohit Sharma loves batting against KKR and it showed today as he posted 80 runs today and also unlocked an achievement as he became the 2nd Indian after MS Dhoni to hit 200 sixes in IPL history.

MI bowling looked lethal from the start and they did live up to their reputation as they were clinical for most of the innings. The KKR batting could not fire off in the first match and MI stroll through to their first win on the UAE soil as they win this match comfortably by 49 runs.

KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first.

For MI with the bat just like the previous game Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opened the batting. de Kock’s stay was shortlived as he hit one straight up in the air and lost his wicket to Shivam Mavi. Mavi followed up and bowled a wicket maiden over.

Rohit and Suryakumar lay a strong foundation for MI:

Rohit has scored only a single century in the IPL and that too against KKR. He looked in good nick today as he hit 6 sixes and 3 boundaries in his 80 runs innings. Suryakumar Yadav who came in early continued on to prove his worth in the side as he managed to hit beautiful cover drives and pull shots and hit 6 boundaries. Suryakumar and Rohit both looked unstoppable as they put up a 90 runs partnership for the second wicket.

An expensive overseas player becomes an expensive bowler for KKR:

Pat Cummins the man who came to the IPL 2020 after just completing Australia vs England series in England and all eyes on him as he was bought by KKR for a whopping 15.50 Crores. The MI batter Rohit and Surya belted him for his short balls over the boundary ropes, later Saurabh Tiwari also managed to hit him for a couple of boundaries.

The nightmare continued as Hardik Pandya continued to assault on him in his third over. Cummins bowled only 3 over and conceded 49 runs at an economy of 16.66 runs in those overs. Although, some positives came for him as he managed to grab hold on to the catches in the deep whenever they came. With the bat, he also played a cameo as he scored 33 runs in just 12 balls.

MI managed to post 195/5 in their 20 overs.

MI prove that they have a strong bowling attack in IPL 2020:

KKR needed 196 to win this match and it was going to be an uphill task for them for sure. Trent Boult started the proceedings with the ball and bowled a maiden over first up. Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine opened the batting for KKR. MI’s 3 fast bowlers provided them just the start they wanted as they took 2 early wickets. Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana had a 46 runs stand between them but Dinesh lost his wicket to Rahul Chahar.

Rohit Sharma also pulled off the unexpected as he brought on Kieron Pollard to bowl for Mumbai after 3 years. Pollard came on to bowl during the middle overs and was decent as he bowled 3 overs and conceded just 21 runs. He also managed to add a wicket to his tally.

Pollard coming on to bowl provided a clear hit that Hardik Pandya is not ready to bowl yet as MI seemed to play it safe as he has come back from his back injury. This was later confirmed by Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene during his interaction with the commentators in the progression of the match.

Jasprit Bumrah in the end claimed two big wickets of Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan in the same over and sealed the match for his side. Although in his final over Pat Cummins belted him for 27 runs but the match had already slipped out of KKR’s hands till that point.

Dinesh Karthik at the presentation says, they have been a bit rusty today and their players know where they need to get better and Cummins and Morgan finished their quarantine today and it’s tough to come back and play so soon.

Below is how the points table looks after Match 5.
