The Celtics needed to be on their A-game to prevent a 3-1 down scenario against the Miami Heat. The Heat on the other hand must have wanted to end the series as quickly as possible. Whichever team makes it to the NBA Finals does need to conserve as much energy as possible.

Statistics

Miami’s biggest contribution in terms of points came from a player on the bench. Yes, we knew how good he is, but nobody expected him to have the game he did. Tyler Herro scored 37 points off the bench. That is 12 more points than the next highest scorer for the Heat, Jimmy Butler. Herro grabbed 6 rebounds as well, all of them being on the defensive end. Butler had 9 rebounds. Bam Adebayo had a big impact as well, scoring 20 points, assisting 4 times and grabbing 12 rebounds. Goran Dragić continued his impressive run scoring 22 points, 9 of which came from 3-pointers. He was second to only Herro in 3-pointers made. Herro went 5-10 from 3-point range.

Jayson Tatum continued his heroics, leading the charge for the Celtics with 28 points. He collected 9 rebounds, all on the defensive end. Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown scored 20 and 21 points respectively. While Marcus Smart scored only 10 points, he recorded 11 assists. Gordon Hayward was the bench player with most impact for the Celtics. He scored 14 points in 30 minutes.

How the game progressed

The Celtics did not start Game 4 like they had the rest of the games in this series. The Heat clamped down on them and the Celtics struggled to pull away as they had in the previous games. The Heat led at the end of the quarter by one point and by 6 points at the end of the first half. The first half ended 50-44 in favour of the Heat. Jayson Tatum was shut down during the first half. He had 0 points to show. That was incredibly impressive work on him by the Heat.

The Celtics came back in the third quarter. Tatum scored half of his 28 points in the third quarter. But Marcus Smart’s three missed 3-pointers meant that they still finished one point behind the Heat at the end of the third quarter. The score was 77-76 in favour of the Heat. Tyler Herro went on a scoring spree with 15 points in the fourth quarter. Tatum, Brown and Walker combined for six 3-pointers, but even that could not secure the win for the Celtics.

The Heat won Game 4 with a score of 112-109. The series is now poised critically for the Celtics, with every game here on a must win for them, as they went 3-1 down. The Celtics will need some big performances in Game 5 to stay in the series.
