Who doesn’t love a good prodigy story? The tale of a kid who conquered against all odds. Being a prodigy isn’t an easy task. The weight of expectations can often be too much for a teenager looking to announce himself on the world stage. Some thrive under the pressure while others crumble in the spotlight. I want to talk about a boy, British by birth and Norwegian by nationality, who so far has taken the world by storm – Erling Braut Haaland.

Looking at Haaland the first thought that comes to one’s mind is…I wouldn’t want to be defending this guy. With a height of 6 feet 4 inches and the muscular frame of a wrestler, Haaland possesses the natural physique flaunted by many a prolific striker before him including the likes of Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Robin Van Persie.

Last season Haaland was already ripping the Austrian Bundesliga apart with a staggering 16 goals in 14 games. However, like countless others before him, his real introduction to the world came in the most prestigious club competition on the planet where the giants of European football lock horns as the whole world watches – The UEFA Champions League.

A debut hat-trick against Genk did draw some attention but the media outburst was fuelled by his goal against Liverpool in the second game which was then followed by a brace against Napoli. His streak of brilliance didn’t end there as he went on to score 2 more goals and provide an assist to end the group stage with 8 goals and one assist.

With Salzburg knocked out of the Champions League and the January transfer window looming, the European giants began to circle like vultures. After a rather short transfer saga that involved Manchester United, Chelsea, and other big European clubs Haaland decided to continue his development at Borrusia Dortmund. This gave him another shot at Champions League football as unlike Salzburg, Dortmund had qualified for the Knockout stages of the Champions League.

Most players dream of scoring a goal on their debut. Some even get away with a brace. But there are only a handful of young superstars who can say they scored a hat-trick on their debut…and none who can say they did it inside of 20 minutes. Haaland successfully made the Bundesliga look like a schoolyard football game with 13 goals and 3 assists in 15 games.

If there were still any doubters left, they were left with nothing but hanging jaws as Haaland pocketed a brace against PSG in the first leg of the Champions League Last 16 that too in spectacular fashion as he carried his team to victory. Unfortunately, PSG turned the tie around and Dortmund were knocked out of the Champions League. Haaland’s tally of 10 goals and one assist in the Champions League in spite of only playing up to the round of 16 was a ridiculous return for a boy his age.

This season, Haaland has wasted no time in hitting the ground running. He has already scored twice in two Bundesliga games and was inspirational in the Super cup while scoring and assisting against arch-rivals Bayern Munich.

At a mere age of 20 years and only 8 months in the spotlight, Haaland has made top tier European football look easy. His pace, strength and absolutely lethal finishing ability make him one of the most dangerous strikers in the world and a prospect to keep a very keen eye on. Furthermore, his unnerving confidence and ability to remain unfazed by the magnitude of the task in front of him make him appear mature well beyond his years. The lad looks like he’s been doing this for years and could go on for many many more. This young boy from the streets of Molde looks set to make the world his oyster. The stage is set and the world is watching but that does not seem to make any difference to Haaland. He’s just here to rule the football world.
