IPL 2020: MI thump KXIP courtesy of stellar performances by Rohit & Pollard

MI took on the KXIP at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. MI beat KXIP by 48 runs to climb back to the top of the table. The highlight of the match was the brilliant performances by Keiron Pollard and Hardik Pandya.

#1. The First Innings:  MI came out to bat first against KXIP. The beginning of the innings was pretty disappointing for MI. They lost Quinton De Kock quite early. The loss of Quinton De Lock was followed by a very small partnership between Yadav and Rohit Sharma. However, Yadav got out and then the star of MI’s previous match Ishan Kishan came out to the middle. Ishan and the hitman had a good partnership of 62 runs. The partnership was much required to stabilize the innings.

However, Ishan Kishan was caught out, trying to hit Gowtham. MI had a pitiful run rate. They seemed to be struggling to get even to 150 when Pollard came out to bat. Keiron Pollard and Sharma stabilized the innings a bit more. Sharma started hitting in the 15th over and Mumbai Indians were finally able to reach 100 runs near the 15 over mark. Soon after that, Rohit was caught out of a Mohammad Shami delivery, and after that Hardik Pandya came to partner Pollard. With just 5 overs left, MI decided to accelerate.

The Pollard and Pandya show had begun. James Neesham faced all the music today. He was hit for 52 runs in his 4 overs. Pollard and Pandya together hit 6 sixes and 6 fours. The last over by Gowtham was pretty miserable for KXIP. He was hit for 4 sixes in the last over. MI scores close to 91 runs in the last 5 overs of their innings. Pollard scored 47 runs of just 20 deliveries and Pandya scored 30 of 11. Once seemed to be struggling to even reach 150, MI managed to post a mammoth total of 191 on the scoreboard.

#2. The Second Innings: Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul came out to bat as usual. These two are in particularly terrific form in this season and the start that KXIP got to the innings proved it. In the first over itself, Trent Boult was hit for 12 runs. In the first 14 deliveries of their innings, KXIP manages to get about 28 runs. The team was cruising at a run rate of 12. They seemed unstoppable until Bumrah entered the picture.

He bowled very economically and scalped the first wicket for MI, getting rid of Mayank Agarwal through a terrific delivery. KXIP slowed down a bit and soon Karun Nair got out on a duck off a Krunal Pandya delivery. After Karun Nair, in the next couple of overs, the run rate fell below 8 an over and the required run rate seemed to be going up. KL Rahul partnered Pooran for a very short time and soon got out unable to leave a mark.

Nicholas Pooran had other plans though. He looked to be in a destructive mood when he came out to bat. He scored a quick 44 in 27 deliveries. But after Pooran got out, there were not many partnerships. Wickets kept falling at quick succession for KXIP and the innings never showed any promise.

Sarfaraz, Maxwell, Neesham, and Bishnoi got out in quick succession. Gowtham showed some resistance by hitting a few sixes but it wasn’t enough. MI put on a real show in bowling. Bumrah, Pattinson, and Chahar did a terrific job with the ball.

Keiron Pollard was awarded the Man of the Match. Overall Punjab needs to find some consistency in batting and MI needs to keep up the performance. Stay tuned for more.
