Alphonso Davies: The Rise of a Teenage Sensation


Alphonso Davies is one of the most successful youth players currently playing as a left-back for Bundesliga football club FC Bayern Munich and the Canada national team. He is considered as a key player when it comes to exploring various qualities as he has an excellent level of pace, dribbling, creativity, and level of passing. Davies is also a deadly assister when the team is on the counter-attack.

1# Background

Alphonso Boyle Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana on 2nd November 2000. His family moved to Canada when Davies was 5. On June 6, 2017, he received Canadian citizenship.

2# Youth Career of Alphonso Davies

As a child, Davies first played soccer with Free Footie, a school soccer league. After playing for Edmonton Internationals and Edmonton Strikers, Davies joined the Whitecaps FC Residency at the age of 14 in 2015.

Davies made his professional debut for Whitecaps FC 2 at the age of 15 years. He scored his first professional goal making him the youngest goalscorer in USL history at 15 years, a record held by Davies until 2020.

3# Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich

Davies signed for Bayern Munich in January 2019. Davies made his Bundesliga debut against VfB Stuggart appearing as a late substitute for Kingsley Coman in a 3-1 victory. He scored his 1st goal by Bayern netting the final goal in a 6-0 win against Mainz. At the age of 18, he became the youngest player to score for the club.

He made his 1st Champions League start on November 6 2019 in a 2-0 victory against Olympiacos. Davies earned an early reputation as one of the best left-backs in the world.

In April 2020, Bayern extended Davies’s contract till 2025. He made a record of running at the highest speed of 36.51 Kmph in the Bundesliga. He broke the record of Haaland of 35.3 Kmph.  Davies was named the Bundesliga Rookie of the year for the 2019-20 season. On 23rd August, he started the Champions League final against PSG, which Bayern won by 1-0 to complete a continental treble.

Davies became the 1st Canadian male international to win the Champions League

4# International Career

Davies represented the U-15 & U-18 Canadian team in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, he was named the Canada U-17 Male Player of the Year for his performances in the U-17 AND U-20 matches. In 2017, he was named Canada U17 Male Player of the Year for a second time by performing excellently for the senior team.

He was included in the squad to perform in the Gold Cup tournament in which he won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer. In 2019, Davies helped his team to win their first match against the United States after 34 years scoring an opening goal that ended 2-0.
