IPL 2020: CSK ’s collapse helped KKR to go on the third spot of the IPL points table

Chennai Super Kings again allowed the game to slip, they bowled well to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 167 runs, and while cashing this score, Watson’s half-century kept them in the lope. But smart bowling in death overs from KKR allowed CSK to fall just ten short of the total.

Kolkata won this match, and they also progressed to the number three spot in the IPL points table. Kolkata Knight Riders reached 167 runs mainly because of Rahul Tripathi’s knock of 81 runs.

After they won the toss and opted to bat first, Kolkata opened with Tripathi and Gill. This was a new opening pair in this match for KKR. Gill and Tripathi did not share a quick like Narine and his opening partners do for the Knight Riders.

But this opening start ensured that KKR could build a healthy innings. It also made Rahul Tripathi set for a significant knock, which he eventually played for Kolkata. He successfully carried the innings along when the other batters failed.

In the last game of Kolkata Knight Riders, which was played against Delhi Capitals, Rahul Tripathi was sent at number 8 position. Every KKR fan and the cricket pandits also criticized Dinesh Karthik for this decision.

Karthik did many experiments in this match, which thankfully worked for the team. He sent Rahul as an opener, and he ended up scoring the half of the runs for his side. Tripathi was also lucky as he survived four attempts of run out, and in that, three attempts were made from CSK’s best fielder, Jadeja.

In the Knight Riders innings, there were no significant partnerships. Rahul held up the one end, and the other batsmen batted around him as not many KKR batsmen got starts. While many batsmen couldn’t even manage to score more than 20 runs in this match.

Tripathi was the highest scorer for Knight Riders. He smashed his fifth IPL half-century, and went on to score 81 runs.  Besides him, it was Sunil Narine, who was the second-highest scorer of the match. Narine didn’t open the innings, and he batted at number four, but still, he contributed 17 runs with Pat Cummins, who was also unbeaten on the same score.

But the other batsmen of the Kolkata Knight Riders team failed to contribute. Nitish Rana and Skipper Dinesh Karthik continued their poor form from the last few matches. While Shubman Gill, Eoin Morgan, and Andre Russell fell cheaply, they couldn’t repeat their cameos to help the young Tripathi who batted nicely at the other end.

Due to Tripathi’s leading contribution of 81 runs, Kolkata knight Riders were bundled out for 167 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

CSK bowlers bowled superbly to bundle out KKR for a modest score. All the bowlers used by MS Dhoni were economical in their spells, and no one gave more than seven runs per over in their quota of 4 overs.

Deepak Chachar was slightly expensive than the other bowlers, but he made it up by picking up the three late wickets in the KKR’s innings. Along with Chachar, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, and Karn Sharma picked up three wickets each to their names.

DJ Bravo was wicketless, and surprisingly Ravindra Jadeja didn’t bowl a single over in this match. It doesn’t happen that MS Dhoni will not bowl Ravindra Jadeja for a single over. But in this match, Mahi did that unusual thing. Jaddu is the lead spinner of the yellow army, and still, he didn’t bowl his overs, which was quite surprising.

The run chase went on well till the halfway mark. But CSK lost the plot to KKR after that. They needed a similar opening partnership, which Faf and Watto shared against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday night. But Faf fell for just 17 runs. This was his first and maybe the last low score for the yellow army this season.

Shane Watson again responded to the faith which the CSK franchise has shown on him. Watto scored his second back to back fifty in this match. Like always, Watto started slow, and this time he didn’t take much time to find his groove.

It was the second over from young Shivam Mavi, which Watson took for runs, and he repeated the similar feat in the sixth over. He hit a couple of fours in both the overs, which got him going in the innings.

He was not extra aggressive, but it was his timing on the shots that Watto played. CSK lost just one wicket for 54 runs after the powerplay overs were done. Watto and Rayudu shared a stand of 69 runs, which kept them in the game after Du Plessis was out early.

But Amabati Rayudu was out before the score could reach the 100 run mark. Rayudu made 30 runs, and this innings collapsed after Amabati was dismissed. Sunil Narine was the one who trapped Watson’s leg before for 50 runs.

Then the two wickets after Watson derailed the CSK’s innings in this run chase. MS Dhoni was clean bowled by Varun Chakravarthy for just 11 runs, and Sam Curran was picked up Russell for just 17 runs.

The fall of two wickets put immense pressure on Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav as these two batsmen failed to finish the game for CSK.

The two KKR spinners made fair use of the slower pitch, which didn’t allow rusty and out of form Jadhav to come good for CSK. While Jadeja tried, but at that point, the target went out of his reach. Despite scoring 90 runs from the first ten overs, CSK batters couldn’t chase down the reaming 78 runs in the last ten overs of their innings.

In the end, Chennai Super Kings fell ten runs short of the target. In their 20 overs, CSK scored 157 runs with Jaddu was unbeaten on 21 of just six deliveries, and rusty Kedar took 12 balls to score just seven runs.

The KKR bowlers made a good comeback in the last ten overs. It was an excellent death overs bowling from Narine, Russell, and Chakravarthy. These three bowlers successfully restricted the batting powerhouse of Chennai Super Kings for just 157 runs.

Expect for Pat Cummins, all the other bowlers like Mavi, Chakravarthy, Nagakoti, Narine, and Russell picked up one wicket each to their names.

The player of the match award was given to Rahul Tripathi for his outstanding knock of 81 runs, which allowed KKR to win this contest.

The next match will be played on 8th October 2020, Thursday between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab at Dubai International Stadium. The match will be telecasted on Star Sports Network and Hotstar.
