IPL 2020 – Bairstow stars in SRH’s thumping win over KXIP in Dubai

Sunrisers Hyderabad has moved to the first half of the IPL Points table because of their thumping win over Kings XI Punjab on Thursday night thanks to a fantastic knock by Jonny Bairstow.

The SRH openers were the ones who laid a solid foundation, a partnership of 160 runs between Warner and Bairstow ensured a thumping win of 59 runs for the Orange Army.

Kings XI Punjab again struggled with the ball. Against Chennai Super Kings, their bowlers couldn’t pick up a single wicket, and due to that, they had to face a ten-wicket loss in that game. In this match, their weak bowling trend continued, it took them 15.1 overs to get a breakthrough.

Nicholas Pooran’s fastest half-century in IPL 2020 season was the only fightback led by the Kings XI. But the other batters failed to show their class in a challenging run chase and due to that, Kings XI Punjab bagged their fifth back to back loss in a row, and they are still at the bottom place of the IPL Points Table.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss, and they opted to bat first. They reached the score of 201 runs mainly because of their opening batsmen. David Warner and Johnny Bairstow did the best what they are usually known for.

Their batting was the key to SRH’s success, and they delivered it by sharing a mammoth stand of 160 runs for the opening wicket. They also broke many records in the process of sharing this stand. Warner and Bairstow are the only seventh opening pair who have notched up 1000 runs together in just 16 innings.

The duo openers scored 100 runs from just the first ten overs. They shared their fifth century stand, and it is only the second time where a team had scored 100 runs on the board after completing just ten overs.

Warner smashed his ninth consecutive half-century against Kings XI Punjab from the IPL 2015 season. At the same time, Bairstow missed out on a well-deserved century by just three runs. Bairstow was out on 97 runs, and he would have been the first overseas player to score a hundred in this year’s IPL.

Kings XI Punjab’s bowlers were all over the park. The experienced bowlers like Shami, Cottrell, Mujeeb, and Maxwell went for plenty in the first 15 overs. Ravi Bhisnoi too gave away 18 runs in his first over. But he bowled his heart out in his second spell and got two big fishes in one over.

Bairstow and Watner were out to the youngster Bishnoi. Bairstow was dismissed for 97 runs while Warner was out after he scored his half-century, David made 51 runs in this match. After these two wickets fell, KXIP bowlers made a mini-comeback. But still, they couldn’t restrict Hyderabad under the score of 200 runs.

Manish Pandey’s woeful batting continued. He was out after he faced just two deliveries. Arshdeep Singh was the one who picked up the wicket of Pandey for just one run. The SRH middle order couldn’t get going and their experiment didn’t work as well.

Instead of sending a more suitable batsman like Kane Williamson, they promoted Adul Samad, but that didn’t work. Samad was dismissed for only eight runs. Ravi Bhisnoi was the man again who picked up his third wicket in the form of Samad.

SRH continued to lose wickets despite the brilliant start they got. The score which could have reached more than 220 runs at one stage, but it reached just to 201 runs. After the middle order collapse, it was the Kiwi captain who stayed till the end and guided the score more than 200 runs for them.

Kane Williamson’s contribution was as vital as Bairstow and Warner. If the Kiwi Captain wouldn’t have stayed unbeaten till the end, then SRH would never have got 201 runs on the board. Williamson scored unbeaten 20 runs off just ten deliveries.

KXIP bowlers made a good comeback in the end. They got their first wicket after 36.4 overs and 408 runs. But their death overs bowling was good after the woeful start which they got. Arshdeep and Bhisnou were the ones who eased off the death bowling woes for KXIP in this match. Bishnoi picked up three wickets, Arshdeep got two wickets whileSahmi took one wicket to his name.

In the high run chase, the in-form batters of Kings XI Punjab didn’t do well. A lot was expected from KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal who were the batsmen with a decent touch to get going. But they didn’t as Agarwal was out for just nine runs in the first over.

Then the possession of wickets started to fall for the Kings XI Punjab. KL Rahul and Simran Singh too fell quickly. Maxwell is called as the big show. But at the moment there is no show from Maxi. The Aussie all-rounder has been a big disappointment once again. He was out for just seven runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad picked up wickets at regular intervals which dented the innings of Kings XI Punjab.

But Nicholas Pooran gave a solid fight. He scored the fastest half-century in the IPL 2020 season. But the target was too big for him to achieve. Pooran was dismissed for entertaining 37 balls 77 runs.

The innings of Kings XI Punjab folded in 16.5 overs with just 132 runs on the board. The lower order of KXIP was out in single digits, and only three batsmen went on to score in double figures for them.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the match by 59 runs, and Johnny Bairstow was awarded the man of the match award for his outstanding knock of 97 runs.

The match will be played on 9th October 2020. This will be the 23rd match of the IPL 2020 season, which will be played between Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Capitals at Sharjah.
