Three years of debut Indian goal in FIFA U17 World Cup


On this day, three years ago Jeakson Singh Thounajom created history by scoring the first-ever goal from the Indian side in FIFA competition. The 16-year-old Jeakson became the first Indian to score in a FIFA U17 World Cup when he scored a charismatic header against Columbia. The golden goal made each and every Indian fan scream through joy after witnessing it.

As it happened……

The Indian team was ready to take on South American giants Columbia after putting a brave fight against the USA on the first matchday. Both of the teams lost their opening matches of the tournament against the USA and Ghana respectively. The first half ended with no marks on scoresheets but the real action happened in the latter half of the game. Columbia took the lead in the 49th minute after Penaloza’s strike and India replied Columbia through equalizing header from Jeakson Singh. Penaloza scored a winner just a minute later silencing 48 thousand crowds at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Delhi and broke the billion hearts of India.

Indian team managed to score only one goal in that campaign which ended after the group stage. India finished the campaign without a single point standing in the last position in the group. The Indian team was defeated by 0-3 to the USA, 1-2 to Columbia, and 0-4 to group toppers Ghana. The tournament marked the first time India have played and hosted a FIFA competition. Indian U-17 side learned plenty of lessons throughout their journey in the tournament.

Jeakson on the rise

Jeakson Singh Thounaojam came from the youth ranks of Minerva Punjab Football Academy. The 19-year-old Manipuri defensive midfielder had a loan spell with AIFF developmental side Indian Arrows just after the World Cup campaign. His performance impressed the scouts of Kerala Blasters to sign him. Spent the first half with Kerala Blasters reserves and then he was loaned back to Arrows for the rest of the season. Eelco Schattorie promoted Jeakson for the first time and he made debut for Blasters in the 2019-20 season opener against ATK.

Blessings from the prestigious tournament

The Final took place at the Salt Lake Stadium in front of 66 thousand spectators between star-studded England and Spain. England made a remarkable comeback trailing 2-0 after the 31st minute and finished the finale with a 5-2 scoreline. The tournament witnessed a record-breaking 1,347,133 overall attendance and whopping 25,906 attendance per game.
