Official: Sergio Lobera appointed as the new Mumbai City FC Head Coach

Sergio Lobera has been appointed as the new Mumbai City FC coach until 2021. He has 25 years of managing experience across different countries managing various clubs. He was also appointed as an assistant manager of FC Barcelona back in 2012. He was the manager of FC Goa previously. He will serve the role of a manager as well as an advisor to develop the Mumbai City FC club further. Certain clubs like Kerala Blasters FC and Jamshedpur FC made a try to sign the manager but at last, it was the Mumbai City FC who made the move successful. Lobera helped FC Goa earn a place at the top of the table recently.

During his time period at FC Goa, midfielder Ahmed Jahouh and defender Mourtada Fall, both players played under the Spanish coach earlier in their careers before joining FC Goa.

At Mumbai City FC, Lobera will join his coaching with Manuel Sayabera. These 2 have worked together for more than a decade since their time at Terrassa FC in 2008. One of the advantages that Mumbai City FC can get is that the club can sign some good Spanish players with the help of Lobera making some strong additions to the club.

Lobera has a great record coaching the FC Goa team. He was appointed as the FC Goa manager back in 2017 when the club finished at the bottom of the table under the management of the Brazilian legend Zico in 2016. After the appointment of Lobera at the club, FC Goa entered into the semi-final in 2017. The club also reached the final during his 2nd year at FC Goa. They won the Super Cup as well where FC Goa won their first trophy. Goa maintained a record to score the highest number of goals for the last two seasons where the Goa striker Ferran Corominas won the Golden Boot award for 2 successive years. In these 3 years of coaching, Lobera certainly became a fan favorite as he was one of the main reasons for FC Goa progressing in these years.

“I am absolutely delighted to join Mumbai City FC. I have enjoyed my time in the ISL so far, but for me, there is still much to be achieved and I believe we will have the players, partners, and management to be very competitive next season. I think the Islanders have huge potential and I’m looking forward to working with the players as soon as possible”. This was the statement Lobera provided after his appointment at the club.

Lobera will be hoping for a good start at the club and will try to manage in such a way that the club showers some great level of performance to earn better results.
