Carolina Marin beat Russian Natalia Perminova in her opening match of the ongoing Danisa Denmark Open 2020. The final score line of the match was 21-7, 21-15. Before the match, their head-to-head record was 2-0, with Marin winning on both the occasions. The former world number 1 and current world number 6 Carolina Marin, looked in good form throughout the match. It was evident that she had worked quite a bit on her deception and speed.

In the opening set itself Marin opened up a huge lead of 7 points till the first break. The score was 11-4 at the mid game interval. Perminova, the world number 60, did not look any match to Marin’s quick play in the first round of Denmark Open 2020. The girl from Yekaterinburg looked sluggish in her movements. Marin’s smashes and elegant drops troubled Perminova a lot. Marin played a couple of beautiful slice drops in the first set. After the break Perminova could score only 3 more points and the first set ended 21-7.

In the second set however, Marin seemed to have lost some focus. There were a number of unforced errors from Marin’s end in the beginning. The score was at parity till 4-4. Later, Marin started opening up the lead however a few mistakes on her part and some brilliant shots by Perminova, cost her a few points. A persistent problem for Perminova was that her shots weren’t long enough and they lacked power. This gave Marin enough time for some beautiful placements. This was evident on multiple occasions in the match.

Perminova was also extremely poor with her judgements. She left the shuttle more than a couple of times assuming it would land outside when actually she was in a really good position to return advantageously. Only once did Perminova take a review when it actually turned out to rule in her favour.

The match was so one-sided that every point scored by Perminova seemed like a victory to her. The first set ended in 11 minutes and the second one ended in 16 minutes. Marin showed extreme domination throughout the game. She displayed how much she valued being on the court after suffering a career threatening injury in the past. However, it would be interesting to see whether Marin can repeat this feat against higher ranked and better players. Till then stay tuned!
