The First Innings:

Mumbai Indians batted first with Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock opening as usual. Rohit Sharma’s recent slump in the form continued as he was unable to perform today as well. Rohit Sharma’s wicket was just the beginning of MI’s woes. Suryakumar Yadav got out on a duck followed by the wicket of Ishan Kishan. Mumbai Indians lost these two wickets in the span of just 14 runs. They were struggling at 38-3 and were in desperate need of a good partnership. De Kock and Pandya provided them with exactly that. They made a partnership of about 50 runs before Krunal lost his wicket. Later, De Kock and Pandya lost their wickets in quick succession. De Kock scored the only half-century in the MI innings. MI were struggling at 119-6 with three and a half overs left. Coulter Nile and Pollard took charge at that point of time. Pollard scored 34 in just 12 balls and Coulter Nile scored 24 at a strike rate of 200 to take MI’s tally to a respectable 176-6. This pair score 57 runs in the last 21 deliveries of the innings. Shami and Maxwell were the star bowlers for KXIP. Shami bowled his four overs at an economy of 7.5 and scalped 2 wickets.

The Second Innings:

Punjab started their innings really well. KL Rahul looked in tremendous form. They were going at about 10 runs an over for the first three overs. Mayank Agrawal was bowled out by Bumrah in the fourth over. Gayle and Rahul managed to have a decent partnership before Gayle lost his wicket. So was the partnership between Pooran and Rahul. Punjab’s innings did not look in a lot of difficulties at the end of 13 overs. Things were pretty much under control for them with Rahul in a good form and Maxwell yet to bat. But quick wickets of Pooran and Maxwell turned the game upside down for them. Bumrah bowled tight overs. The new batsman Hooda was keeping the other end stable. But a beautiful yorker by Bumrah got Rahul out and then the KXIP innings looked in jeopardy. Jordan and Hooda were playing very well and KXIP needed only 2 runs off the last delivery. They managed to score only one and it was time for a super-over.

Super Over 1.0:

It was KXIP’s turn to bat first. Rahul and Pooran came out to bat. For MI, it was Bumrah who would ball. Bumrah tried to ball yorkers but in the attempt, bowled 4 full tosses in the over. But the KXIP batsmen were unable to capitalize on it. Pooran got out on the first ball he faced through a brilliant catch taken by Anukul Roy, who was the substitute fielder for Ishan Kishan who pulled his hamstring. While playing a cheeky shot on the last ball, Rahul lost his wicket by an LBW. Punjab only scored 5 runs. Rohit and De Kock came out to bat for MI. They scored 4 runs in the first 5 deliveries of the Shami over. They needed 2 off the last delivery. De Kock got run out on the last ball while diving to complete the run. It was a beautiful effort by Rahul who collected a wide throw and flung it on the stumps. The first time in IPL history it was the time for another super-over.

Super Over 2.0:

It was MI’s turn to bat first. Hardik and Pollard came out to bat and it was Chris Jordan’s turn to ball. Jordan did not ball quite well and bowled a couple of wides. MI scored 9 runs off the first 5. Hardik Pandya got out and Surya was the new non-striker. Pollard tried to hit a six on the last ball but couldn’t get it because of an acrobatic save from Mayank Agarwal at the boundary. MI still scored 11 of the super-over. Gayle and Agarwal came to bat for KXIP. Trent Boult was to bowl for MI. The first delivery was a full-toss which was hit for a 6 by Gayle. There was a single off the second delivery. After that Agarwal hit two consecutive boundaries to take Punjab home.

KXIP had to dig really deep to beat the giant MI. Let’s see how the season progresses. Till then, stay tuned!
