IPL 2020: A RR win further hampers the playoffs dream for CSK

CSK faced RR at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The face-off between these two teams is always a reminder of the 2008 IPL final. The result was also the same. RR beat CSK by 7 wickets to climb to the 5th place in the table. CSK, on the other hand, went to the bottom of the table with one match extra as compared to the 6th and 7th placed teams. Let’s see how the match progressed.

The First Innings:

CSK batted first. The newly found opening combination of Curran and Du Plessis was the one to bat first. Jofra Archer bowled an excellent first over giving just two runs. CSK’s run rate problems started from the very beginning. Du Plessis got out early when he was caught inside the circle of an Archer delivery. Shane Watson hit a couple of fours but wasn’t able to impress. He got out early as well.

The next man in was Ambati Rayudu. He partnered Curran for some four odd overs. Curran got out trying to accelerate the innings. CSK were 3 down and at this point, Dhoni came out to bat. Rayudu got out within a few deliveries after Curran and CSK’s innings was in shambles.

Jadeja and Dhoni formed a significant partnership. But this partnership seemed to be doing more harm to CSK than good. Even at the 14-over mark, CSK were struggling to even be at a run a ball rate. Dhoni looked completely out of touch. He was run out and after that, it was Kedar Jadhav’s turn to bat. Jadeja was the only good performer for CSK, scoring 35 off 30 deliveries. CSK scored an extremely poor 125 in their 20 overs.

Archer, Gopal, and Tewatia were the star bowlers for the Royals, each picking up a wicket. Shreyas Gopal had the best economy of 3.5.

The Second innings:

RR had a very easy target of only over a run a ball to seal the deal. However, RR faced difficulties quite early in their innings. Stokes and Uthappa opened the batting for RR. Things were going well for the first three overs before Stokes got out on the last delivery of the third over. After that, Uthappa and Samson got out in quick succession. Samson scored a duck and RR found itself in all kinds of problems.

Smith and Buttler were the next guys in. This was the partnership that carried RR home. The target wasn’t steep hence, playing patiently was the only thing that RR needed. These two did just that for RR. Smith proved to be an excellent anchor, whereas Buttler went on a demolition run. Buttler hit 7 fours and 2 sixes, scoring 70 off just 48 deliveries. The experience of these two batsmen came in handy for RR.

The match turned out to be a pretty one-sided affair. It was another blow to the already struggling CSK. The match surely raises concerns over Dhoni’s future. The CSK team looks aging and is in a dire need of complete restructuring. Their weaknesses were exposed totally by the Royals. CSK next faces the mighty MI. Will they be able to beat MI again?
