Marcus Rashford MBE – Talented on the pitch, a Legend off it

When you’re a great player you become a legend. But when you’re a great person too you become a legacy. Marcus Rashford is firmly on this path to immortality. He broke into the Manchester United first team in February 2016 with a debut brace against Midtjylland. He soon became a teenage sensation scoring on his Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, and England debut. But his story is just beginning.

Four years into his professional career, Rashford has already crossed boundaries and landmarks that players his age only dream of. He has been part of the national team at the Euros and the World Cup.  But while creating history on the pitch Rashford is also battling social injustice of it. His focus has been on the underprivileged children of the UK.

During the lockdown, Rashford spearheaded a campaign to raise money in order to feed school children across the country. He succeeded in raising over 3 million meals in one month. His spirited efforts and repeated appeals also pressurized the government to overturn its decision to abandon the program of providing free meals to school children during the summer break.

The fight against child poverty is a long and endless one but that does not seem to discourage the young star one bit. Having come from a similar background himself, he understands the plight of these kids. He refers to them as ‘Future stars” and identifies their importance to the country and the world. Rashford was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester for his remarkable campaign against child poverty. He was also awarded an MBE for his efforts.

On the pitch, Rashford has been unstoppable for Manchester United. He is constantly improving under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and smashing new records all the time. He has become a  mainstay in a very promising young Manchester United team. With 22 goals and 11 assists last campaign in spite of an extended stint on the sidelines through injury, Rashford is slowly becoming United’s most important player. His record in big games is impressive and would put some former greats to shame.

At an age of just 22 years, Rashford has already cemented his place in history books. Irrespective of where his professional career takes him from here he will always have a place in the hearts of millions around the world. His philanthropy and excellence have made him a shining example for people everywhere. He has not forgotten where he came from and has both feet firmly on the ground. The mark of true greatness is humility. Marcus will not rest until he has done everything in his power to ensure that no child in the UK goes hungry ever again.

Take a bow, Marcus Rashford MBE. You have made your club and your country proud!
