IPL 2020: MI cruise through to the top of the table with a 10-wicket victory against CSK

MI faced the CSK at the Sharjah Stadium today. CSK had a loss of face in today’s match. MI beat the CSK by 10 wickets, who faced their first-ever 10 wicket defeat, that too at the hands of their biggest rivals.  It comes as a final nail in the coffin for the already eighth-placed CSK team which is facing huge scrutiny from the fans as well as the cricket pundits. MI climbed to the top of the table above DC and RCB on the basis of the NRR and CSK languish at the bottom. Let us analyze how the match progressed.

The First Innings:

Chennai was rattled by the ‘Thunderboom’ today. For those who you don’t know what it is, it’s the bowling partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult. It was Rituraj Gaikwad, the youngster from Maharashtra and Du Plessis who opened the innings for Chennai. Curran did not open and Watson was on the bench today. Boult opened the bowling for MI. Gaikwad was caught leg before wicket on the fifth ball of the first over. The great downfall of the Superkings had begun. Bumrah got Rayudu and youngster Jagadeesan out on two successive deliveries. CSK were 3-3.

Dhoni came out to bat at that point in time. In the next over itself, Du Plessis was caught behind off a Boult delivery. The score was 3-4. Dhoni and Jadeja had huge pressure to handle. Dhoni hit a couple of boundaries and so did Jadeja. Jadeja was seen off by Trent Boult soon. After that, Dhoni was caught behind off a Rahul Chahar delivery and Chennai were at 30-6. Deepak Chahar soon got out. Thakur partnered with Curran for some time.

Later, in the fag end of the innings, it was Tahir and Curran who salvaged the innings a bit. Curran was excellent with the bat, scoring a half-century and a great character under tremendous pressure. He is surely one for the future. Boult and Bumrah were a nightmare for the CSK today. Chennai put a three-digit total of 114 on the Boult which was some respite for them.

The Second Innings:

The only way CSK could expect to put up a fight was by getting some early wickets. But, De Kock and Kishan which was the opening pair today were in no mood to give CSK any. They began the innings by scoring boundaries. The absence of Hitman who was out owing to a hamstring injury was not even felt. Kishan was in an aggressive mood. He scored 68 of 37. De Kock also scored a quick 46. They took Mumbai home in just 12.2 overs. Not a single bowler looked impressive.

Chennai has soon real problems. They need to restructure the entire team now. The team is aging and that has been visible in plenty of games. They need to have a good mix of the young and the experienced. Curran is one for the future. Maybe they can build a team around him. Another persistent question is whether it is the right time for MSD to hang his boots and hand over the captaincy to someone like Du Plessis? Stephen Fleming is the man who would have to give a deep thought about this. Stay tuned for more!
