In this match, Mumbai Indians missed their regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been out of the second match and Kieron Pollard, the Windies Skipper, was the captain for the Blues in this match as well.

Mumbai won the toss and opted to bat first in this encounter. In the game against Chennai Super Kings, which MI won by ten wickets. Quinton De Kock and Ishan Kishan played brilliantly to see them through.

But De Kock couldn’t continue his form against Rajasthan Royals. It was Archer who cleaned him up for just seven runs. After this early blow, Ishan Kishen continued from where he left from the last game. But in this innings, he wasn’t fluent as he was against CSK.

Kishan and Suryakumar repaired the innings well with a much-needed partnership. Suryakumar batted fluently, but Kishan struggled to time the ball well. The scoreboard was ticking mainly because of Suryakumar’s nice shots.

But Kishan hung in there to keep the defending champions in the game. Kishan was in much relief because he didn’t have to take any risk because Suryakumar took all of them, which is why MI maintained a run rate of 9 -10 runs per over in their first ten overs against a decent RR bowling lineup.

On the halfway mark, MI was well placed at 89 runs for the loss of one wicket. But RR pulled things back. In the 11th over, Ishan Kishan was out for 37 runs, and his partnership of 83 runs with Suryakumar was ended.

After the breakthrough of Kishan, the double R’s bowlers struck twice in the two overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Skipper Kieron Pollard were dismissed in quick succession. Surya was out on 40 runs, and Pollard, who was dismissed just once in the tournament till now, was clean bowled by Shreyas Gopal for six runs.

Saurabh Tiwary was next with Hardik Pandya. But Saurabh struggled to get his timing right, and Hardik Pandya also took time to settle. Rajasthan Royals had this opportunity to bring the run rate down.

But they allowed Tiwary and Pandya to settle. Tiwary couldn’t do much as he was dismissed for 25 runs. It was a power-hitting from Hardik Pandya, which propelled the score towards the 190 run mark.

After Tiwari was out, Krunal Pandya just gave his brother a company. He was unbeaten on three runs. But the bulk of the scoring was done by Hardik. He scored unbeaten 60 runs from just 21 deliveries. He hit only two fours, and he smashed seven sixes in this innings.

Due to this late onslaught from Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians posted a challenging total in front of the Rajasthan Royals. MI scored 195 runs from their allotted quota of 20 overs.

The RR bowlers strangled MI in the latter half. But they couldn’t maintain the pressure mainly on Hardik Pandya. Jofra Archer and Shreyas Gopal took two wickets each while Karthik Tyagi picked up one wicket to his name.

To chase this challenging score down, Rajasthan needed a Royal start from their openers. The pair of Uthappa and Stokes failed again to provide a good start. It was Robin Uthappa who continued his poor form as the opener. He was out for just 13 runs.

Steve Smith played some eye-pleasing shots to keep RR in the game. But he too couldn’t go a long way as Stokes did later on. Skipper Smith was out dismissed for just 11 runs. RR desperately needed a partnership to keep their hopes alive.

And that match-winning and uneaten stand came from Stokes and Samson. Stokes became the first overseas player of IPL 2020 to smash a century. It was the second IPL hundred for Stokes in this cash-rich league tournament.

The England all-rounder and Sanju Samson shared 152 runs stand, which sealed the game for Rajasthan. Stokes scored unbeaten 106 runs, and Sanju Samson also smashed a half-century. He was not out on 54 runs, which allowed RR to chased this challenging score of 195 runs in 18.2 overs.

Rajasthan won this match by eight wickets, and they have kept their playoffs hope alive.

This time there was no magic from Boult,  Bumrah, Chahar, and Krunal Pandya. It was only James Pattinson who picked up the two wickets for the Blues.

Ben Stokes was named the man of the match for his outstanding unbeaten century.

The next match will be played today between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders at 7.30 PM IST in Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
