Dhoni will continue to lead CSK in IPL 2021- CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan

The Indian Premier League 2020 season hasn’t been the ideal tournament for the Yellow Army. Dhoni and his men are still languishing at the bottom of the IPL points table with just eight points from 12 matches, and this year they aren’t qualifying for the playoffs stages.

But Still, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings has made a big decision to retain MS Dhoni as their captain for the IPL 2021 season. CSK has cut a sorry figure in the 13th edition of IPL. Despite that, Kashi Vishwanath has declared in the interview that they will continue with Mahi as the captain for the next season.

He said that, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings had earned three titles. The 2020 year is the only season where CSK hasn’t qualified for the playoffs, and one bad year doesn’t mean that the management will change everything. It is pretty much sure that Dhoni will lead the CSK side in IPL 2021 season.

In the previous seasons, CSK was boosted with strong performances given by Dhoni. But this year, his bat also didn’t do much of talking. In the 12 matches played so far, Mahi has just scored 199 runs at a strike rate of 118. 45.

The IPL 2021 season is six months away, and Dhoni, who is already 39 years of age and has passed his prime, means the CSK management will take a worthy risk ahead of the IPL 2021 season.

But the CEO of CSK doesn’t think like that. He feels that the team was hit by many things, which caused the downfall in this season.

He said that the CSK team didn’t play according to its true potential. The yellow army lost those games which they should have won. With that, the side’s balance was also hampered because of few COVID 19 cases in the team and the withdrawal from Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh.

Despite all this, CSK’s CEO is showing his faith with Skipper Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming. Vishwanath also admitted that this CSK team has many aging players, and some of them also have past their prime.

In the past three years, CSK won one title in IPL 2018 season, and in IPL 2019 season, they missed defending their title by just one run. But things were all different in UAE as Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi had posed a difficult challenge for the team.

For CSK, the IPL 2020 season is over with just two games to play this season. But many have expressed their disappointments, and they have asked the CSK management to look beyond Dhoni and the senior members for the next IPL season.

The team management will take some tough calls for the next season. But the problem for the yellow men team is that they don’t know if they can retain the same squad for the next season or whether new auctions will be conducted for the IPL 2021 season.

But if CSK decides to rebuild, it will not be easy as they will have to fight the timelines, and they will have to trust more on the young talents. One thing more which CSK didn’t do this season is that they didn’t persist with young talents as the other teams did.

It is difficult for the next season to predict which player might be picked or which player may be dropped. But the CSK management will not want aging players again for the next season, which means that this IPL season was the last for some senior members in the CSK squad.

Shane Watson, Kedar Jadhav, Imran Tahir, and Piyush Chawala might not be retained for the IPL 2021 season. Whereas Ambati Rayudu and Faf Du Plessis might not be retained, but they will still be considered for their consistent performance in the IPL 2020 season.

Faf is still fit enough to play the shortest format of the game, and in this season, he was the highest scorer for CSK and the third-highest run-getter overall in the IPL 2020 season. While Rayudu shinned in the limited opportunities he got. But that winning spark was missing from him in this season. Still, CSK can go ahead with him and Bhajji, who has a three-year contract with the CSK team.
