Mick Schumacher – An Upcoming Star Following Legendary Footsteps


When someone says F1, most of us think about the fast cars speeding through the race tracks. But when it comes to knowing the racers, even the person knowing only slightly about F1 would have heard of the name Schumacher. Such is the legacy of Michael Schumacher, that his name lives on years after his retirement. His 91 GP win record was long-standing, only to be broken recently in the Portuguese GP by Lewis Hamilton. He is still regarded as the greatest of all time.

However, today’s article is not about this great legend. It will focus on another Schumacher, Michael’s son, Mick. Mick grew up watching his dad and uncle race. Mick’s uncle, Ralph Schumacher was also an F1 racer. Mick’s mother (M. Schumacher’s wife) Corinna is an accomplished horse-rider. So, racing runs in the family. At the tender age of 9, Mick started his motorsport career. He first started with Karting. In order to negate any possibility of nepotism, Mick did not use the name Schumacher then. Instead, he used his mother’s maiden name Betsch at the beginning.

In 2013, while Mick was on a skiing trip with his father, tragedy struck. Michael Schumacher had a life-threatening accident while skiing. Mick was there with him at the time. Schumacher went into a coma and his health status still remains shrouded in mystery for the world. But in spite of this setback, Mick carried on with great courage. He entered Formula 4. He participated in the MRF Championship that is held in India.

Rising through the ranks, Mick drove in Formula 3 and is currently competing in Formula 2. Mick is currently ranked 1 in the Formula 2 Championship and is soon expected to make his Formula 1 debut. He was expected to debut earlier this season but that got postponed due to the pandemic. Mick will now probably debut in the 2021 season. There are speculations going on as to which team he will race for. He was poised to race with Alfa Romeo this season but now it looks like he will race for the Haas Racing Team in 2021.

There is already a lot of excitement in the F1 community about his debut. Sebastian Vettel has been outspoken about it. In one of the interviews, Vettel said that he wished Michael was there to see Mick’s debut in the F1. Vettel idolizes Michael Schumacher and hence is very supportive of Mick’s entry into F1. Lewis Hamilton had also expressed his excitement about it. Along with Mick, Britain’s Callum Illot is also expected to make an F1 debut.

Mick has large shoes to fill. His dad has placed a bar so high that it would take a lot of effort to fulfill the expectations. The Schumacher name stays on in F1. Will the legacy Continue? Will Mick Schumacher be able to repeat his F2 feats in F1. There is certainly a lot of excitement about this among ‘Schumacher’ fans. Over the course of the next few years, these questions will find the right answers.
