The Indian Premier League season in the United Arab Emirates hasn’t been an ideal one for the three-time IPL champions.

Dhoni’s men in yellow are at the bottom of the points table and for the first time will not qualify for the playoffs.

Post their elimination, the Chennai Super Kings have won two back to back games and in both the games, a young star has been a big positive in a season which has been a complete mess.

After England’s all-rounder Sam Curran, India’s young star Ruturaj Gaikwad is a star in the making. The man from Maharashtra has scored two back to back half-centuries, which have resulted in CSK wins. His unbeaten knock of 65 runs against Royal Challenge Bangalore was his maiden half-century in IPL cricket. In the next game, which was against Kolkata Knight Riders, Gaikwad smashed his second IPL fifty and guided the team to win that match in another run chase.

Gaikwad hails from Maharashtra. He made his first-class debut at the age of 19 years. With his good performances in List A cricket, Gaikwad has impressed one and all. His averages in List A cricket is over 56 from 32 games.

He has further improved his batting skills, which has made him a complete modern batsman with a temperament like an old school player and his improvisation skills with is a match to many modern-day greats.

Gaikwad had a poor start to his domestic career but the young lad bounced back like a seasoned campaigner, in his List A career, the right-handed opening batsman has already scored five centuries and ten fifties to his name.

Gaikwad is a complete package at the top order because he has the skill and temperament to build an innings, another thing which makes Ruturaj an outstanding player is that he can shift gears according to the situations. At the age of 20, Ruturaj made his first-class debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In that season, Gaikwad scored 444 runs at a healthy average of 63. 42. He also smashed three half-centuries and one century for Maharashtra.

Gaikwad fluently delivered his best in the whole tournament as the top order, opening batsman, and he ended up as the third-highest run-scorer for that season of Vijay Hazare Trophy. With that, Ruturaj Gaikwad announced himself in style.

Ruturaj had earned a marquee status after his stint with Maharashtra at the Vijay Hazare that season but in the next season, his form slightly dipped as he scored just 330 runs from seven matches with an average of 47.30 and the strike rate of 102.

He has played for India’s under-22 teams at the Asia Cup tournament, but what caught everyone’s eye was his ton against the England Lions side. Gaikwad had many good performances with India A side, and earlier this year, he earned an IPL contract with the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

There was a huge blow when the Yellow Army travelled to the United Arab Emirates for the IPL 2020 season. Ruturaj was diagnosed as a COVID 19 positive, and with him, another two CSK members were also found as COVID 19 positive. Gaikwad didn’t play the starting matches for the franchise and when he found a place in the playing XI, he was asked to bat at an unfamiliar middle-order batting position. He also lost his place in the side because he couldn’t get going in the matches.

Then CSK promoted Sam Curran at the top order and there was no sign of Gaikwad playing for the Yellow Army. After Sam Curran failed to be consistent at the opening slot, Dhoni and CSK management tried Gaikwad at the top order in the game against Mumbai Indians but that match also didn’t go well for CSK as Gaikwad was dismissed for a golden duck along with Faf Du Plessis and many others. CSK reached 114 runs mainly because of Sam Curran’s fighting innings.

Gaikwad was persisted with at the opening position and he finally delivered with the two match-winning knocks for the Yellow Army. His knock of 72 runs against Kolkata Knight has earned him high praise from Captain Dhoni and Coach Stephen Fleming. Now with the last game for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2020 season, CSK will want Ruturaj Gaikwad to deliver for the one last time as his consistent performances must have given them new hope for the next season.

Chennai Super Kings will play their last match of the IPL 2020 season against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday, 1st November 2020, at 3.30 PM IST in Dubai International Stadium, Dubai.
