IPL 2020: Captain Morgan inspires KKR to a thumping win over RR

Kolkata Knight Riders are still in the race to qualify for playoffs. They are in the contenting to finish in the top four, and they can even win the tournament just like they did in the 2012 and 2014 IPL seasons. But at the same time, RR are knocked out of IPL 2020 after their 60 runs loss against KKR.

With this win, the Kolkata Knight Riders team jump to the fourth spot in the points table from the eighth position.  It was a marvelous comeback from Skipper Morgan, who led the team from the front. He played a crucial knock, which lifted the team in a challenging situation.

KKR didn’t get a good start with the bat after RR won the toss and opted to field first. They lost Nitish Rana early. Jofra Archer was the one who continued his class with the new ball, which allowed RR to start their innings with a wicket of Rana for a golden duck.

The partnership between Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi gave KKR hope. They shared a stand of 72 runs, which helped them to be in the game. But the bowlers of Rajasthan Royals struck twice in the eighth over.

Gill batted well. But he couldn’t continue that form after the start he got. Rahul Tewaita was the one who broke this stand for the Royals. Gill was dismissed for 36 runs, and Tewatia sneaked once again after three deliveries and dismissed Sunil Narine for a duck.

Rahul Tripathi continued to hold the innings. But he too fell for 39 runs to Shreyas Gopal, and the former skipper of KKR, Dinesh Karthik, continued his poor form with the bat as Rahul Tewatia tweaked DK for no score.

KKR was in trouble when Morgan and Andre Russell came in to bat at the crease. KKR needed Russell to stay until the end with the skipper, which would have helped KKR finish with 200 runs on the board.

Andre Russell played well. His blitz knock of 25 runs, which came from just 11 deliveries, was entertaining, but it didn’t benefit the team. Pat Cummins, too showed some support and scored 15 runs to his name.

But it was Morgan all lone who guided the score towards the 200 run mark single-handedly. The England skipper reached his highest IPL score of unbeaten 68 runs, which lifted the KKR team for a tricky position in spite of good bowling efforts by RR.

Due to their captain, The Kolkata Knight Riders posted a challenging score of 192 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The double R’s had chased down two targets successfully before this encounter, which might have boosted their confidence.

But their bowlers were taken apart from Eoin Morgan single-handedly. His cameo had put pressure right back on the Double R’s despite starting the innings well with the wicket of Rana. Archer and Shreyas Gopal picked up one wicket each while Karthik Tyagi ended up picking two wickets, and Rahul Tewatia had picked up three wickets to his name.

RR had to chase down this target in 13.2 overs, which would have helped their run rate be better than Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals. The RR openers blazingly started the innings with a six, and they scored 19 runs from the first over, which was bowled by Pat Cummins.

But the Aussie bowler came back strongly and dismissed Robbin Uthappa in that same over. Uthappa was out after he scored just six runs. Uthappa’s wicket caused the downfall of the Royals as they looked to chase the total down in 13.2 overs, and they didn’t look to win the contest.

Ben Stokes played two blinder knocks before this match, and he also got to a good start in this one. But Cummins came back strongly to dismiss the star England all-rounder. Stokes was out after he scored just 18 runs.

Smith, the former Aussie skipper and the current captain of the Double R’s, was also clean bowled by his fellow Aussie teammate in the same over which Stokes was dismissed. Smith was out for just four runs. RR was in all sorts of trouble as Samson and Riyan Parag was also dismissed quickly. Rajasthan had lost half of their side with just 37 runs on the board.

Jos Buttler was the top scorer for RR in this innings, and he tried to repair the innings with Rahul Tewatia. But their partnership didn’t do any damage to KKR. It was Varun Chakravarthy who picked up the wicket of Buttler for 35 runs. Then it was Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal, who took the score towards the hundred run mark.

But it was all over for the Royals then as Tewaita was also dismissed on 31 runs and RR lost two more wickets of Archer and Tyagi. In the end, RR scored just 131 runs on the board with the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.

If Morgan inspired KKR with the bat, then Pat Cummins led them the way with the ball after he was expensive in his first over. Cummins and the other KKR bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals, which allowed KKR to be in the game. Cummins picked four wickets to his name while Shivam Mavi and Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets each to their names while Kamlesh Nagarkoti picked up one wicket to his name. KKR had won this match by 60 runs to knock RR out of the IPL 2020 season, and they also keep their playoff hopes alive.

Pat Cummins was awarded the man of the match for his excellent bowling spell, which reduced Rajasthan Royals to such a low score. Cummins picked up a four-wicket haul to his name in this match.

The next match will be played today between Royal Challengers Bangalore Vs Delhi Capitals at Abu Dhabi in Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Today at 7.30 PM IST.
