Happy Birthday Captain Virat Kohli !

It’s 2nd April 2011 and India is struggling to perform against Sri Lanka in the final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup. India has lost 2 wickets of Tendulkar and Sehwag in quick succession and a young boy from Delhi has just entered the game. It’s the 22-year-old youngster of the Indian team. The pressure is mounting, but the starry-eyed boy carries on. He makes 35 of 49 deliveries before getting out. India wins the match later and the boy carries Tendulkar on his shoulders through the celebrations. Yes, it’s Virat Kohli, the future captain of the Indian cricket team.

Born on 5th November 1988 in Delhi, Virat started playing cricket at the age of 9. Coming from a middle-class family, Kohli was raised in Uttam Nagar, Delhi. Since the early stages of his cricketing career, Kohli was always a part of the Delhi cricket team. He captained Delhi in Polly Umrigar Trophy and also was part of the Delhi team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. He was later selected in the U-19 Indian Cricket Team. It was a good selection and Kohli captained the team to a World Cup win in 2008 in Malaysia. Soon after that Kohli got selected in India’s national team. He was very fortunate to win the ICC Cricket World Cup within a few years of his selection in the team.

He always performs consistently in the limited-overs format. So good is his batting average during chasing that he is termed as the Chase Master. He was always a favorite of MSD and soon sealed his position as the preferred position 3 player for the Indian cricket team. Kohli has scored 70 centuries so far across formats and 104 half-centuries in international cricket. No wonder Kohli is called as the ‘run machine’. With 11867 ODI runs, he is one of the all-time leading ODI scorers. Currently the captain of the Indian cricket team, he has an impressive win record.

Kohli is married to actress Anushka Sharma and they are expecting a baby soon. He is currently leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League and the team has qualified for play-offs. Kohli is a fitness freak and he believes in constantly pushing his body to the limits. Fitness is the key to his perennial form. He is also a brand ambassador for a number of FMCG brands.

He is also one of the most animated characters on the pitch. He has been involved in a number of controversies in the past because of impulsive actions and angry nature. Particularly in one of the Australia series, he had flashed a middle finger at the fans while fielding at the boundary line. But that is a thing of the past now. There haven’t been any such incidences in recent times.

Virat Kohli is also a recipient of the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. He has also achieved a number of cricketing awards like the Wisden Cricketer of the year in 2016,2017 and 2018. He has also been the ICC ODI Player of the Year thrice. Kohli has also been involved in charity through the Virat Kohli Foundation (VKF). He has also been vocal about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
