Women’s T20 Challenge – Trailblazers Bag a Massive against Velocity in Sharjah

Velocity had a good outing in their first match of the Women’s T20 Challenge. Velocity won the first game from a challenging situation and that too in a run chase against Supernovas yesterday. But today, their tables turned upside down when they met Trailblazers in their second match of the tournament. Smriti Mandhana and her team gave an excellent bowling performance, which helped them to clinch a nine-wicket win over Velocity.

Velocity won the toss, and they opted to bat first at Sharjah. But their star batsmen couldn’t give the same performance in the second game. Their poor batting was the main reason behind the massive loss in this game.

It was another poor start to the innings by the opening batsmen of the Velocity team. Shefali Verma scored 17 runs, but again, she couldn’t convert her excellent start into a big score. Verma smashed one six and a boundary in her mini knock.

After the wicket of Verma, it was the Trailblazers bowlers who completely donned the game. Their bowlers picked up two wickets in one over with just 19 runs on the board. Sophie Ecclestone, the England bowler, did this never-ending damage to the Velocity team.

The middle order of Velocity looked completely rattled in this match. The last match winners, Veda Krishnamurthy, Sushma Verma, and Sunne Luus, were out in the single-digit scorers. These three batters had put a great fight against Supernovas in yesterday’s match.

But today, they scored just zero, one and four runs respectively. It was Shikha Pandey and Kasperek who put a mini fight in the lower middle-order batting position. But still, the Trailblazers made a comeback in this match, and they made this encounter a one-sided affair in the end.

The run-out of Shikha Pandey was the main turning point of the match. She was the one with Kasperek who could have taken the score to a fighting total in the end. After Shikha’s run out on ten runs, the lower order of Velocity also perished before the 20 overs.

Kasperek was unbeaten on 11 runs, which the second-highest score after Shafali Verma’s 17 runs and Shikha Pandey was the third-highest scorer with just ten runs for Velocity in this match. Mithali Raj’s team was bundled out in only 15.1 overs, and they didn’t even get close to scoring 50 runs.

Velocity lost all their ten wickets on just 47 runs. It is a very embarrassing thing for any team to get bundled out for a score of less than 50 runs in all three formats. But in the short format, this moment is even more embarrassing.

Trailblazers bowlers bowled exceptionally well in this match.  Sophie Ecclestone was the star for them. She picked up four wickets to her name, and she gave just nine runs from her 3.1 overs.

Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Jhulan Goswami picked two wickets each to their names alongside, Deepti Sharma picked up one wicket in this match.

The run chase was not a big one. But still, Trailblazers lost the wicket of Smriti Mandhana for six runs. Then it was a mere formality of the run chase. It was completed by Deandra Dottin, who was unbeaten on 29 runs, and Richa Ghosh, she was not out on 13 runs.

The Trailblazers Team chased the low score of 48 runs in just 7.5 overs and won the match by nine wickets and 12.5 overs to spare. Leigh Kasperek was the only wicket-taker from the Velocity team. She dismissed the Trailblazers skipper in this match.

Sophie Ecclestone won the player of the match award for her outstanding bowling display.

The Next match of the Women’s T20 Challenge will be played between Trailblazers Vs Supernovas on Saturday, 7th November 2020 in Sharjah Cricket Stadium at 7.30 PM IST.
