Women’s T20 Challenge – Supernovas win against Trailblazers to advance to the final


It was a clinical show by the Supernovas team, which helped them to win the third match of the Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah. Supernovas won the toss and batted first. The women of Supernovas batted well to post a decent total on the board.

They laid an excellent foundation for their innings, which set up a formidable score after completing their 20 overs. The Supernovas openers Priya Punia and Athapaththu shared a partnership of 80 runs for the first wicket.

Priya Punia was the first one to be dismissed after she scored 30 runs. But Athapaththu made full use of her good start, and she converted it to a decent score in the end. The Sri Lankan women’s batter scored her maiden half-century and ensured that the team is on the right track.

The innings went on well till Athapaththu, and skipper Harmeenpreet Kaur batted till the 16th over. But when Athapaththu was dismissed for well made 67 runs. The Trailblazers bowlers made a mini-comeback and restricted the Supernovas batters below the 150 run mark.

The Supernovas team could not get the finishing kick, which would have helped them to score above 160 runs, especially after the start, which they got. The wickets fell in quick succession after Athapaththu was dismissed.

Jemimah Rodrigues has been out for just a single run. Then the three run-outs in one inning, which derailed the proceedings of the Supernovas team. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was also run out on 31 runs, with Siriwardene and Anuja Patil for two and one runs, respectively.

In the end, Supernovas scored 146 runs in their allotted 20 overs. It was a good comeback from Trailblazers, which restricted Supernovas to a decent score. Their fielding was the main reason which allowed them to make an excellent comeback into this match. Jhulan Goswami, Salma Khatun, and Harleen Deol picked up one wicket each to their names.

It was a thrilling run chase as both the teams were involved in the neck to neck battle. Trailblazers excellently started their run chase. Smriti Mandhana and Deandra Dottin shared a stand of 44 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs. But this stand was broken when Deandra Dottin was the first one to be dismissed. Dottin couldn’t convert this score into a big one. She was out for 27 runs, and Richa Ghosh also followed Dottin soon to the pavilion as Ghosh managed to score just four runs.

After the double-wicket over, Mandhana took the responsibility of guiding the team home after she was dropped twice. The skipper of Trailblazers and Deepti Sharma shared a mini stand, which took the team’s score on 59 runs for the loss of two wickets at the ten over mark.

After the halfway stage, the Supernovas dented the Trailblazers innings. Anuja Patil was the one who picked up the wicket of Skipper Kaur for 33 runs. Then after two overs, Dauanlan Hemalatath was also out for just four runs. Deepti Sharma and Harleen Deol tried to give the finishing kick to the innings. But the Supernovas bowlers bowled some good line and lengths, which didn’t allow the Trailblazers batsmen to up the ante.

Radha Kumar, the spin bowler bowled an excellent last over, which allowed the game to spin in favor of Supernovas. Harleen Deol was dismissed on the last ball when Trailblazers still needed two runs to stay unbeaten in the tournament. Harleen Deol was dismissed for 27 runs, and Radha Kumar successfully defended ten from the final six deliveries, which gave Supernovas a win by just two runs.

For Trailblazers, it was near but yet so far in this match. They had the batsmen who could have finished the game, but they were out at the wrong time. Supernovas’ bowlers kept Trailblazers’ batsmen in check, which didn’t allow them to chase this total down. Radha Yadav and Shakera Selman picked up two wickets each, while Anuja Patil picked up one wicket to her name.

Chamari Athapaththu won the player of the match award for her excellent innings of 67 runs, which laid the foundation of this thrilling win.

Due to this win by Supernovas, Velocity is knocked out of the tournament. The Women’s T20 Challenge’s final match is between Supernovas Vs Trailblazers on Monday, 9th November 2020, in Sharjah at 7.30 PM IST.
