IPL 2020: MI win the coveted title by comprehensively beating DC in the final

The final of the 13th edition of the IPL was held at the Dubai International Stadium. Defending champions MI player against a young Delhi Capitals team led by Shreyas Iyer. In contrast to the IPL finals of previous years, it was a pretty one-sided affair. MI won the match and lifted the trophy for the 5th time. The defending champions defended their title aggressively. The match was full of exciting moments. Let’s review the game.

#1. The First Innings:

Delhi Capitals won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a strategically correct decision as MI have a poor record of chasing in the finals. But, the Delhi innings began on a wrong footing. Prithvi Shaw was dropped from the team today. Stoinis was sent to open the innings and was caught behind for a golden duck on the opening ball of DC’s innings. Trent Boult was on a roll today. He picked up two more wickets in the innings. The welcome change for MI was the inclusion of Jayant Yadav as the spinner instead of Rahul Chahar. Jayant Yadav dismissed Shikhar Dhawan out bowled. He bowled extremely economically. Jasprit Bumrah missed the Purple Cap as he wasn’t able to scalp any wicket today. The partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant was the one that threatened Mumbai. They stabilized and accelerated the Delhi innings. Both hit brilliant half-centuries. But, they were unable to capitalize on their advantages and Delhi struggled again. Delhi reached a total of 156 in their 20 overs.

#2. The Second Innings:

MI opened with their successful partnership of De Kock and Rohit Sharma. The bowling was opened by Ravi Ashwin. De Kock was audacious today. He hit Rabada for 18 runs in the second over of the innings. DC was forced to take Rabada out of the attack for some time. Mumbai started on the right footing and never looked back. Rohit Sharma found form today and scored an amazing half-century. He anchored the innings and hit the right shots at the right moments. Suryakumar Yadav also showed a great presence of mind by sacrificing his wicket during a mix up which led to his run out. He realized the importance of Rohit Sharma being at the middle and left his crease. The youngster Ishan Kishan played a mature inning and saw Mumbai through. It was a brilliant team effort by Mumbai Indians today. Delhi bowlers weren’t as effective today. Youngster Dubey was awarded a debut by DC in the final. There were some good fielding displays by the DC but that was pretty much it for them.

Mahela Jayawardene surely got the tactics right for MI. He was able to assemble a perfect combination of the players he had. The balance in the side was simply superb and the execution throughout the season was on spot. It seemed like the team totally deserved the win. Ponting also gets the credit for getting the best out of all the youngsters. Shreyas Iyer lead from the front. The team seems to have a great future ahead.
