ICC have identified the shining light that cricket has brought in the post the recent un-lockdown phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. They want the brand identity of the T20 World Cup to be energetic as well as one that embodies the collective spirit of all the nations and their fans who will be participating in the tournament in India.

This ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be the 7th edition of the tournament with the host country India being the winner of the inaugural edition of the World T20 held in South Africa in 2007. India was last the host of this tournament in 2016 when they were knocked out in the Semi-final by West Indies who eventually went on to lift the trophy in Kolkata. We all remember those four sixes by Carlos Braithwaite in the final over to Ben Stokes to set the West Indies on their way.

The T20 World Cup returns after a 5-year long absence and as the ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney quoted ” With Diwali just two days away and with the countdown to the tournament in India underway, this is an opportune moment to unveil our brand identity that so wonderfully reflects the vibrant festival of lights. We are working very closely with the BCCI to deliver a stellar tournament bringing the world’s best players together to go head to head in the first global cricket event since the advent of the pandemic. Our focus will be on staging a safe and secure event that fans from across the world can enjoy. Our compliments to the BCCI, the teams and the Emirates Cricket Board for successfully managing the Dream 11 Indian Premier League in a safe and secure manner. We will continue to take the learnings from this and other Members who have staged international cricket into our planning”

The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also expressed his delight at the press release for hosting the T20 World Cup by saying “It is a matter of great honor for us to be hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. India has successfully staged several global events since the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 1987 and I am sure cricketers from around the world would be excited at the prospect of playing in our cricket-loving country. I have enjoyed being part of ICC events as a player and know from experience that nothing beats the buzzing atmosphere of a global cricket event with millions around the world watching every game. I now look forward to playing my part as an administrator as we prepare to host the prestigious event.

The tournament is scheduled for the months of October-November in 2021 which is a suitable weather phase for playing some lovely cricket across India. 16 teams from across the globe will compete in the T20 World Cup with Papa New Guinea being the latest new nation to enter the tournament.

The Clock is now officially ticking!
