MI had a truly amazing IPL season this year. Now they have won the IPL consecutive times and 3 times in the last 4 years. The success of any team depends on two important factors: Team members and execution. MI has been in the process of building a good squad for a long time and they have consistently retained a lot of players. Jayawardene certainly got his squad balance and depth right.

However, this does not mean that all the players in the team are giving their best. There have been a few players that have not performed well or aren’t a fit for the current team. We would have a look at 3 such players today, whom MI can do without.

  1. Mitchell McClenaghan: The Kiwi has been a star performer for MI in the last few seasons of the IPL. But with the inclusion of Trent Boult in the squad this season, he has pretty much become redundant. With the likes of Pattinson and Coulter-Nile also in the line-up, his chances in the playing XI look very bleak. Age is also another factor to be taken into consideration. He is already 34 and had been out of international cricket for a long time now. Poor form is also one of the worries. Apart from that, there are young Indian bowlers in the MI squad like Digvijay Deshmukh and spinners like Anukul Roy who are being mentored by Zaheer Khan. There is a high chance that they would soon break into the squad. So considering all the aspects, McClenaghan looks like he falling out of favor for the team and MI can do without him.
  2. Saurabh Tiwary: He has played a few games this season for the MI. He scored well in almost all of them with a few exceptions. Although he is a good batsman, fitness is one of the major issues. In a team with quicker players like Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, Saurabh Tiwary looks too sloppy. It has been evident umpteen number of times in terms of his fielding efforts. MI can get a lot many batsmen out there. In a team that already has a good depth in batting, they can certainly let go of Tiwary.
  3. Chris Lynn: Lynn was a star for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the past. But since the last few seasons, his batting hasn’t been impactful at all. MI signed him this season but he did not even get to play a single match. He practiced in the nets. With De Kock and Rohit Sharma around, he won’t be getting a chance anytime soon. It is better for the team as well as the player if he moves on to some other team. Even when Rohit was injured, Lynn wasn’t the go-to option for MI. So it certainly explains his place in the pecking order.

In the next auction, MI should find stronger replacements for these players. Other than these three, all the players in the squad were pretty much impactful throughout the tournament. MI can also go for an overseas pacer or an all-rounder to replace Coulter Nile or Pattinson. But the rest of the team has been phenomenal. We hope that the 2021 season is also as exciting as this one. Stay tuned!
