Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – The Wall of Indian Football


Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is an Indian footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Bengaluru FC and the Indian national team. His safe hand saves have benefited the Indian side to a greater extent. He is the first choice keeper of the Indian national team. He admires former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar and Indian player Subrata Paul. He is the 1st Indian footballer to play in the Europa League and was recently awarded the Arjuna Award for playing his amazing part for the Indian team.

#1. Early Life and Club Career

Gurpreet was born on 3rd February 1992 in Punjab. He started his football career playing for the St. Stephen’s Academy before joining the I-League. He joined the I-League club East Bengal as a youth player in 2009. In 2010, Sandhu officially signed a contract for East Bengal and made 5 appearances in the season. He was, later on, selected as the first choice keeper for East Bengal in the 2011 Federation Cup. He made his AFC Cup debut against Al-Oruba where the match ended in a 0-1 defeat.

In 2014, Sandhu signed for the Norwegian club Stabaek as a 2nd choice goalkeeper and later on, got a chance to play in the Europa League in 2014. He left Stabaek in 2017 and returned to India to join Bengaluru FC. He extended his contract with Bengaluru FC until 2023.

#2. International Career

Gurpreet made his debut for the India U-19 team against Iraq in the 2010 AFC cup qualification in 2009. He was called up for senior team U-23s to play for the 2011 AFC cup. He was called up for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nepal but failed to provide a performance in the qualifier games.

He was, later on, selected as a first choice keeper for the Indian National team. He captained the Indian National team against Puerto Rico and he gave a crucial performance leading the team to a 4-1 victory.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the most valuable goalkeeper of India and currently among the highest-paid footballers of the Indian team. He is valued to be approximately around 2.5 crores in the transfer market. He becomes the fifth Indian player to play professionally in Europe after Mohammed Salim, Baichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri, and Subrata Paul.

He is definitely considered a fan favorite as the flying saves made by him are a delight to watch every time. He is currently just 28 and will get more opportunities to create more records and continue the current form.
