India Vs Australia Test Series – 5 Players, who might replace Virat Kohli in the last three Test for the Tour Down Under

Virat Kohli is a giant feature in International Cricket after Sachin Tendulkar from the Indian Cricket team. VK has donned the three formats of the game whenever he has played in the blue or the white jersey.

Kohli is the King of Cricket because of his admirable skills with the bat. He has been a leading run-scorer for the Indian Cricket team in all three formats and the cash-rich tournament like the Indian Premier League.

The King has the immense power to succeed in the challenging conditions of Australia when their full-fleshed series starts on Friday, 27 November 2020. When India toured the Aussie Nation in 2018, Virat and his men won the first Test series on Australian soil.

That Test series victory was achieved after 71 long years, and the men in blue also clinched the three-match ODI Series by 2-1 margin, and the series in the shortest format was drawn because of the rains in Australia.

But this time, India will play the last three matches without their regular skipper. Virat will play the ODI and T20 International series. He will also play the Day-Night Test match at Adelaide Oval. This will be India’s first-ever Pink Ball Test match on Australian soil.

Virat’s absence in the last three matches of the four-match Test series will be a massive blow for the Indian Cricket team. He has been a highly successful batsman in Australia. The BCCI has granted Kohli a paternity leave because Virushka is expecting their first child.

Due to Kohli’s absence, there are many questions raised, but the most important question is who will take Virat’s place in the test side at number 4 position?

Virat has scored most runs at the number four batting position in Test matches. In Australia, he has had an excellent series whenever India has toured that nation. At the number four spot, VK has scored 1274 runs with six centuries from just 12 matches he played Down Under.

Today, in this segment we shall include the five batsmen from India who can take the number four batting spot of Virat Kohli during his absence from the last three matches of the four-match Test series against Australia Down Under-

  • Shubman Gill-  The 21-year-old batsman was an integral part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the IPL 2020. The right-handed batsman was the highest run-scorer for the two-time IPL winners. He scored 440 runs in 14 matches, and he was one of the most consistent performers for KKR this season. The Punjab DA Puttar has not played much international cricket for India. Gill has been featured only two ODIs, and he scored just 16 runs at a strike rate of 50. The selectors have named him in the Test team for the tour of Australia. Gill could be a suitable replacement for Virat Kohli as a top-order batsman. Shubman has played 21 first-class matches, and he has scored 2,133 runs at an average of 73.55. His highest score of 268 shows that Gill can play long innings in the longer format of the game. He can be the first choice to replace Kohli at the number four position.

  • KL Rahul – Another batsman who had a brilliant IPL 2020 season in the United Arab Emirates. He also won the Orange Cap for scoring most runs in the cash-rich league tournament. KL Rahul is the second option for India who might replace Virat Kohli at number four. Rahul was instrumental in India’s 5–0 T20I series win over New Zealand. Then, Rahul performed brilliantly in ODIs as a middle-order batsman. Rahul made his debut in the MCG against Australia in 2014 as a middle-order batsman. He has played 60 Test matches, and he has scored 2006 runs at an average of 34.59. The 28-year-old has not played a single innings at the number four position for India in Test matches. But due to his excellent form and bit of experience, Rahul will be a top candidate to replace Kohli.

  • Rohit Sharma – Rohit Sharma was recently included in India’s Test squad. Rohit was controversially left out of the team due to injury. He played a few matches for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020. Hit Man has been rested from the limited-overs series against Australia.  The right-handed batsman had a great domestic season with the white-ball last year. He dominated the opposing teams along with Mayank Agarwal. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury before the ICC World Test Championship series against New Zealand. In the absence of Virat Kohli, team management could need an experienced player at the number four position. But Rohit is a seasoned opening batsman in Test matches as well. He has two centuries and one double century in his last six Test innings. So, the management might keep Hit Man as the top order player because the team needs solidity in the opening slot as well.

  • Hanuma Vihari – Hanuma Vihari was an essential player of the Indian team that won the Test series against Australia in 2018-19. The right-handed batsman scored 111 runs for the team in three matches played Down Under. In the upcoming test series against Australia, Vihari can be another option for the number four spot. He has a lot of experience under his belt by playing test matches in Australia. He impressed everyone with his performance in the West Indies, and he scored a half-century in New Zealand as well. Vihari could form a solid combination with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle order. The 27-year-old Andhra player has scored 6,860 runs in first-class cricket. But a tougher challenge awaits him in Australia.

  • Rishabh Pant – Rishabh Pant has given some disappointing performances in 2020. KL Rahul has replaced him in limited-overs cricket. Pant will likely get a place in India’s Test XI for the Australian tour and that too, when Kohli will not there in the last matches of the Test series. Pant had scored a century during his previous tour of Australia. His batting performance played a significant role in India’s historic series win, and his banters with Tim Paine showed that he could dominate the Australian team in the game. Pant can be the next big thing in world cricket. Delhi Capital gave him a lot of support in IPL 2020. But he doesn’t have that consistency which is required as a top-order player. He might get a chance at number four. But Saha might be a front runner for this role if he is fit.
