Cricket as a sport had its first appearance at the Commonwealth Games back in the year 1998. The multi-sport extravaganza was held in Malaysia included 16 teams divided into 4 groups featuring the likes of Australia, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka as well as various Caribbean nations.

This will although be the first time in the Commonwealth Games history that the women’s cricket tournament will be a part of it. The Commonwealth Games, are set to be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8, 2022, and Edgbaston will host the women’s T20 event.

This time around it will be an eight-team event, hosts England and six other top-ranked teams on the ICC women’s T20I rankings will gain automatic qualification for the extravaganza. April 1, 2021, is the cut-off date for the rankings.

The final team taking part in the tournament will be decided via qualifier for which the format and details are yet to be finalized. The deadline for the Qualifier is January 31, 2022. Also if West Indies ranks in automatic qualification then ICC has planned to conduct a qualifier tournament among the Caribbean teams to determine which country will play in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“We have worked closely with the CGF and ICC Members over the last year to confirm the qualification process. said  ICC Women’s Cricket Manager Holly Colvin said. It’s fantastic that we are supporting opportunities for a Caribbean island and Commonwealth countries ranked outside the top seven to have the chance to qualify for this momentous event.

“It is a watershed moment for our sport as women’s cricket takes center stage for the first time at the Commonwealth Games. It is a huge opportunity to show the skills, strength, and talent of these female athletes to sports fans across the Commonwealth and attract a new audience to continue to break boundaries for a bright future.

“It is hugely exciting for cricket to be a central part of the sports program where more medals are awarded to female athletes. Cricket will be staged in the heart of Birmingham, which is a vibrant, diverse city with a strong passion for cricket. We expect nothing less from the crowd supporting the women’s teams at Edgbaston.”

India Women’s team is definitely one the favorites to win a medal in Birmingham in two year’s time given the fact that they reached the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final in Australia earlier this year. The South African team won the gold medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games by defeating Australia and their women’s team will definitely be looking to repeat what the men’s team did in the previous edition.
