India was in the number one position in the WTC points table, but Australia has gone to the number one position because of the new rule.  Australia has a point percentage of 82.2, and India has been pushed to the number two position with 75 % in the World Test Championship.

This change has been approved by the International Cricket Committee, which is headed by Anil Kumble. The ICC has decided to change the old rule because many series got canceled and postponed due to the world pandemic of COVID 19.

Till now, the World Test Championship matches were played was lesser than fifty percent, and the International Cricket Council is expecting the Test championship matches to be played over eighty-five percent till the end of the March 2021 season.

According to the current standing in the Test championship points table, no match can be considered as winners and losers because the teams are spilled on the points table. The International Cricket Committee has opted to go with the current standing on the WTC points table based on the matches played.

The Cricket Committee and Chief Executives Committee support the new approach based on the ranking teams’ points. The new rule also reflects on the team’s performance, and it doesn’t allow a disadvantage to the other teams who couldn’t complete the matches due to the world pandemic situation.

The ICC has explored numerous options regarding this. They will proceed as per their old plans, which was to have the WTC final in England at Lords Cricket Ground on June 2021.

The new rule of the WTC points table says that a team can win a hundred points. India has won 360 points to their name, and Australia has earned 296 points so far. But India has contested for more points than Australia, and that’s why their percentage is lower than the Aussies in the points table.

The points table in the Test championship will be the same for this season as well. As per the old method, a winning team can earn 60 points in a two-match Test series, 40 points in three-match series, and 24 points for playing a five-match Test series.

India and Australia will play a series of four test matches, starting with a Pink Ball Test match in Adelaide Oval starting from 17th December 2020. Then Team India will host England for a five-match Test series in India in January 2021. India will look to play all the Test series to gain 720 points.

While The Aussies are scheduled to tour South Africa and the Kiwis will play a Test series against Windies and Pakistan at home.  Australia, England, and New Zealand have missed one series each, and all the teams will now compete for 600 points.

Pakistan is ranked fifth in the points table. The men in green have played three and more series, and now they are scheduled to play two and more series. The Proteas and the Windies will play three series each, with Bangladesh, have one series each against Pakistan and West Indies.

The ICC has made the changes in the rule according to the matches which the teams actually play. So, it will determine the percent of points that they win those games. The WTC’s final match will be played as per the schedule on June 2021 in the UK.

The ICC Cricket Committee is for solving the cricket related issues. The committee had recommended changing the finishing positions in the points table, and the executive of the ICC had agreed to this change in the meeting conducted yesterday.

The new change will not hamper the matches. They will be played as it is. But due to the new rule, the competitiveness will increase. It will give more chances to all the team to contest in the final. In the last six months, the WTC matches will be more exciting as there are just four to five teams who are the strong contenders to reach the final in June 2021.
