Ravi Shastri a few days back did give it away that the duo needs board the flight in the next 3-4 days to be able to participate in the test. Due to the covid-19 restrictions, the players have to go through the necessary 14-day quarantine period.

While the rest of the squad flew directly from the IPL bio-bubble were allowed to practice during the quarantine period. But as both these players are currently in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, the same privilege may not be extended to them.

“He (Rohit) was never going to play the white-ball series, they were just looking to see how long he needed the rest because you can’t afford to be resting for too long,” Shastri told ABC Sport.

“If you need to play in the Test series or any red-ball cricket, you’ve got to be on the flight in the next three or four days. If you aren’t, then it’s going to be tough.”

Shastri said that NCA’s medical team is currently assessing how long would be Rohit’s break from the game.

“But things could get difficult if he’s asked to wait for too long, (because) then you’re talking of the quarantine again, which might make it really tough for even him to come just in time for the Test series,” the head coach added.

Rohit suffered a hamstring strain during the second half of IPL 2020, while Ishant suffered an abdominal muscle tear and was ruled out of the IPL after playing just one game.
According to reports as per Times Of India, middle-order batsmen Shreyas Iyer who is part of the limited-overs outfit for the Australia series may be asked to extend his stay for the Border- Gavaskar Test series.
“There won’t be any fresh player coming in after Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma’s arrival. The selectors picked a jumbo squad for this reason. If the need arises, Shreyas could be asked to stay back,” a BCCI source was quoted as telling TOI.
