IND vs AUS 2020: Australia thump India in the 1st ODI by 66 runs

Indian team’s Australia tour started on a wrong footing. The first ODI was played between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) today. It was a disappointing outing for the visitors. Australia batted first and posted a mammoth total of 374 on the board in their 50 overs. It was a difficult total to chase on any day, on any ground. India fell short by 66 runs. Let us analyze both the innings:

The First Innings: It was Australia’s turn to bat first. The innings was opened by Finch and Warner. Both looked in a terrific form. They set up a partnership of 156 runs before Warner was caught behind on Shami’s bowling. India found some respite because of that wicket but a lot of suffering was still in store for them. Steve Smith who came to bat at number 3 looked on song. He made another 100-run partnership with Finch. Both Finch and Smith ended up scoring a century. Towards the end of the Australian innings, acceleration was provided by Glenn Maxwell.

Maxwell looked to be in a T20 mood. He scored 45 runs off just 19 deliveries, hitting 3 sixes and 5 fours. Labuschagne and Stoinis got out early today but that wasn’t consequential for the Aussie innings. The Aussies had already accumulated plenty of runs in their kitty. India’s bowling attack did not look sharp. Shami looked to be in a good form and took 3 wickets.

Navdeep Saini and Chahal have a lot of room for improvement. Jasprit Bumrah managed to take one wicket today after a long dry spell in ODIs. The Indian bowlers need to work on their line and length if they want to be successful in the campaign. India also looked short of one good all-rounder. Playing with just 5 bowlers won’t suffice in the Australian conditions.

The Second Innings: India came out to bat with the new pair of Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan. India had a terrific start with the openers scoring about 50 runs in the first 4 overs. They looked in a hurry. Agarwal got out soon off a reckless shot. Virat Kohli who came to bat at number 3 had some luck today.

He was dropped by Adam Zampa very early in his innings. He hit a few boundaries but got out on 21. Shreyas Iyer and Rahul also did not contribute much today. India were struggling at 101-4 in the 14th over. It was Pandya and Dhawan who gave India a lot of hope.

Pandya made 90 runs and they had a partnership of 128 runs, before Dhawan got out. After Dhawan’s wicket, Jadeja was the only batsman left. India had the intent but did not have enough wickets. Pandya got out trying to hit Zampa for a six. Later Navdeep Saini put some resistance but that was it.

India still managed to score 308 runs and fell short by just 66. Considering the fall of wickets, it was a job well done. The star bowler for Australia today was Josh Hazelwood. He scalped three wickets and bowled in a good line and length. Starc was hit for too many runs. Stoinis bowled well but was injured. Overall Australia performed really well.

The next ODI will be played on Sunday. It would be interesting to see how India comes back. Till then, stay tuned!
