ISL 2020-21: Mumbai City FC crushes SC East Bengal in a 3-0 victory


Mumbai City FC clinched crucial three points after a 3-0 one-sided victory over SC East Bengal. Islanders are back on track after a disastrous first game while the forgettable ISL debut run continues for Red and Golds. Red and Gold brigade are yet to score their debut goal in Indian Super League. Adam Le Fondre’s brace and Boumous’ hero of the match performance helped Mumbai to crush East Bengal on GMC Stadium Bambolim.

Islanders healed their wounds from 1-0 defeat against NorthEast United by knocking FC Goa in a recent fixture. East Bengal lost their debut ISL game against arch-rivals ATK Mohun Bagan but shown a glimpse of their intention through possession-based attacking gameplay. East Bengal coach Robbie Fowler eyed on setting the correct tempo to get positive results.

Into the huddle

Both managers made considerable changes in their lineup from the last fixture. Sergio Lobera wanted things to happen in different manners therefore he applied whopping four changes. Cy Goddard who had a great debut in the last match left out on the bench along with Farukh Choudhary, Sarthak Guloi, and Amey Ranawade. While Ahmed Jahouh also made comeback in the lineup after getting suspension due to a red card in the opening game. On the other hand, Robbie Fowler also came up with two changes axing Gharami for Irshan and Meitei for Luwang.

First half strife

Mumbai City player Mandar Rao Desai who spent the majority of his career at FC Goa became the first player to complete 100 ISL appearances. Veteran Mumbai City striker Adam Le Fondre also completed his 600 career appearance today. SC East Bengal got a major blow when skipper Daniel Fox suffered from injury and left the field in the sixth minute. Veteran prominent name Mohammad Rafique stepped onto pitch seemed Fowler changed few player positions.

East Bengal committed big numbers in attack then Rowllin Borges initiated supreme counter-attack through long ball to Hugo Boumous. Boumous easily surpassed defender Surchandra Singh, entered into the box, and then served an easy tap-in to Adam Le Fondre. Adam Le Fondre did not make any mistake to register his first ISL goal from open play. Thus a perfect counter-attack from Islanders gave them a deserving lead.

Dominating second half for sky blues

Spaniard Sergio Lobera is known for attacking approach no matter what situation demands. He had two options for the second half either protecting a lead or making it bigger and as expected Lobera went for the second one. Mumbai received a penalty in the early minutes of the second half after goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar’s foul on Hugo Boumous in the penalty box. Adam Le Fondre’s cool finish made it memorable on his 600th career appearance.

Referee Tejas Nagvenkar awarded freekick to Mumbai City after Angou’s foul on Adam Le Fondre in the 56th minute of the game. Chipped ball into the penalty box and it’s Hernan Santana who captures it to dart. Spaniard Hernan Santana delivered it to the bottom corner to make it 3-0 for Islanders. The game was done and dusted for East Bengal on the negative side from that moment.

It was Hugo Boumous’ day after all as he contributed to all three goals of the day. First, he ran a solo show for Le Fondre’s goal, earned a penalty, and then assisted Hernan Santana for the final goal. The most valuable player of the 2019-20 season looked in top form to splash happiness on West Coast Brigade faces. Boumous was awarded much-deserved hero of the match honor for his memorable performance.
