ISL 2020-21: NorthEast United takes three points after 2-0 win over East Bengal

NorthEast United’s unbeaten run continues as they thumped SC East Bengal in a 2-0 victory. Robbie Fowler’s incessant attempts went in vain thus resulted in disappointment for the Red and Gold Brigade. Highlanders edged them down with an own goal from Surchandra Singh and an injury-time goal from Rochharzela at Tilak Maidan.

NorthEast United had intense strife in the last fixture which resulted in a 1-1 draw with FC Goa. That ensured Highlanders an undefeated position in the league table. East Bengal coach Robbie Fowler must’ve tried to heal the mental wounds of players from 0-3 disastrous fixtures with Mumbai City. Red and Golds arrived on the pitch with no match points and goals under their badge this season.

Surprisingly Gerard Nus made whopping five changes keeping Dylan Fox and injured Subhasish Roy Chowdhury aside from the lineup. Kwesi Appiah and Ashutosh Mehta were included back in the lineup after making a substitute appearance against Goa. Nus fielded NorthEast lineup with an all-foreign front three consisting of Kwesi Appiah, Luis Machado, and Idrissa Sylla. Fowler made one change veteran Sehnaj Singh replaced injured captain Daniel Fox also still no start for Jeje Lalpekhlua.

Shaky first half

The referee denied the penalty demand in consequence of Ashutosh Mehta’s 20th-minute effort on Jacques Maghoma in the penalty box. Surchandra Singh’s own goal gave NorthEast United a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of the game. Ninthoi crossed the ball to Sylla well although Surchandra’s heavy contact delivered it in goal. Even though Red and Golds were trailing by 1-0, still they played the first half equally well.

Highlanders took all

Gerard Nus’s love for the counter ball continued again as he decided to shield his lead. Kerala star CK Vineeth replaced striker Balwant Singh who seems still finding his lost rhythm back. A perfect counter-attack embraced NorthEast United’s lead in regulation time by 2-0. VP Suhair crossed it to Rochharzela and Chhara’s clinical finish stamped it. A superb counter-attack goal from super-subs.

Robbie Fowler used all arrows from his quiver but failed to break the deadlock. The referee’s decisions which went against them generated buzz. East Bengal might be in a better position after the final whistle if those penalties were given. Unfortunately, the situation still remains the same. SC East Bengal is yet to score debut ISL goal and match points.

Dylan Fox was left out on the bench hence Belgian central-defender stepped up and led the Highlanders’ defense line. He played a vital role in a result where NorthEast United defense stayed impervious after 90 minutes. Benjamin Lambot was adjudged as Hero of the match after a thumping defensive performance.
