Lanka Premier League final, Jaffna Stallions vs Galle Gladiators: Who won yesterday’s LPL 2020 match?

The inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League finally comes to a close. In the LPL final which concluded yesterday, Jaffna Stallions thumped Galle Gladiators by 53 runs to lift the LPL 2020 trophy.

Jaffna Stallions batting rises to the occasion:

After winning the toss, Jaffna skipper Thisara Perera opted to bad first. Initially, the Jaffna Stallions had issues with their batting but in the finals, the contributions came in from the top and the middle as well. Avishka Fernando and Johnson Charles provided a decent start to the Stallions as they scored 27 & 26 runs respectively.

Later on, Shoaib Malik alongside Dhananjaya de Silva stitched a strong partnership in the middle period of the game. The duo managed to stitch a partnership of 69 runs between them. De Silva batted well for his 33 runs but departed right towards the end of the 16th over in trying to accurate.

Shoaib brought in his experience and really set the tone for his side to get to a huge total in the finals. He scored 46 runs in 35 balls he faced. Towards the back end, the in from Stallions skipper provided the finishing touch as he played a brilliant cameo. He scored 39 runs in just 14 balls and helped his side post 188 runs in 20 overs.

Dhananjaya Lakshan was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings for Galle Gladiators as he picked 3 wickets.

Luck runs out for Galle Gladiators on the night of the finals:

Galle Gladiators did not have the best of the seasons as they were in the bottle half of the table till the end. Gladiators had just 2 wins out of the 8 matches they played. They were tied with Kandy Tuskers on 2 points, Gladiators made it into the semis by having a better NRR.

In the semi-finals, Gladiators managed to pull off an upset as they thumped Colombo Kings by 2 wickets. Responding to Jaffna Stallions’ total in the finals, Gladiators’ top order just collapsed as they were 7/3. Danushka Gunathilaka had a bizarre of runs outs by the hands of Thisara. Ahsan Ali who is the aggressor departed after scoring just 6 runs.

After the early blow, it was just making the recovery for Gladiators. Bhanuka Rajapaksa the Gladiators skipper led a counter-attack, and smashed four sixes in the space of six balls, spread over two overs. He lost his wicket while he was batting on 40 off 17 to Shoaib Malik.

Azam Khan who came late down the order managed to hammer 4 sixes. Unfortunately, wickets just tumbling at the other end. Azam finally perished on 36 runs off 17 as he tried to take on Duanne Olivier. In the end, all Gladiators could accumulate was 135/9, and Jaffna Stallions pretty much sailed to victory.
