ISL Update: Mumbai City back to winning ways & Northeast United face FC Goa tonight

The ISL has sure captured the imagination of the Indian fans along with a global audience this season with fantastic football on display in Goa. Mumbai City FC beat Kerala Blasters at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim, the adopted home of Kerala Blasters on the 3rd of February.

The game started in the usual fashion as Mumbai City FC looked dominant on the ball and created a couple of golden opportunities for striker Adam Le Fondre who failed to convert early on. Kerala took the lead through a corner on minute 27 courtesy of the former Las Palmas midfielder Vicente Gomez. He won a free header in the box from Sahal’s wonderfully whipped set-piece. Amrinder made some wonderful saves for Mumbai City FC in the first half to keep Kerala at bay.

Kerala did take the lead to half-time but much to their frustration Mumbai City equalized in the first minute of the second half through Bipin Singh who scored his second goal of the season. The comeback was complete when Adam Le Fondre was fouled in the penalty box by the Blasters’ defender Costa and the Mumbai City striker smashed the penalty in the bottom right-hand corner to relieve the pressure of him and set Mumbai City FC on the way to a victory. Amrinder was the Hero of the Match for his brilliance between the sticks.

Mumbai City boss Sergio Lobera in his post-match press conference said that “I am very proud of the attitude and the character of my team. It’s not easy to react this way after losing a game and it is not easy after having so many chances at the start of the game and not scoring and then conceding a goal. The reaction in the second half was amazing. I am very happy because it was an important win for us today and three very important points.” The boss also praised his Captain and Hero of the Match saying “For me, Amrinder is the best goalkeeper in India. He’s a very good goalkeeper, he’s got us points. I don’t like to speak about individuals but for Amrinder, it’s just not this performance but his performances all season.”

While Mumbai City sits with a bit more comfort at the top of the ISL, last year’s shield winners FC Goa face a rejuvenated Northeast United under the leadership of Khalid Jamil. The Highlanders have beaten both title favorites Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan in their last 2 games and will be confident ahead of this game. FC Goa has had 3 draws in a row and will be without star player and captain Edu Bedia for this match due to his suspension. The match will be LIVE on Star Sports 2 and Hotstar at 7:30 pm IST on 4th February 2021.
