ISL Update: Gallego brace rescues Northeast United as Bengaluru play Chennaiyin tonight

The battle for the top 4 spots is heating up as we head towards the end of the group stage games. Northeast United and FC Goa have been in the race, level on points before the game, and looked to get an edge over the other in this game. The match ended in a 2-2 draw keeping both teams at 22 points with Goa having the better goal difference with a couple of penalties from Gallego saving Northeast’s blushes in the game.

The game started in a very balanced fashion, Goa did have the majority of the ball but Northeast United were proving to be a handful with their high-intensity game and they pushed FC Goa into transitions. The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute by Alexander Jesuraj for FC Goa as the winger made the most of his opportunity with a well-taken goal which justified FC Goa’s domination of the ball.

Northeast United were knocking at the door for quite a while in the game. Federico Gallego has been the key player for Northeast United for a few seasons now and the Uruguayan was back at it again in an important game for his side. Gallego shielded the ball well on transitions and more often than not found the right pass. It was an equalizer from the spot by Gallego that put Northeast United back in the game in the 41st minute.

The second half started with the game being a cagey affair. The possession was more balanced in the second half with most of the game being played in deepish midfield positions with either team being unable to find a cutting edge. FC Goa took back the lead in the 80th minute through a Gurjinder Kumar own goal but it was the Federico Gallego show again as Northeast United talisman scored another penalty to level the game.

The match ended at 2-2, a result that was probably all that both the teams deserved to get. Federico Gallego was awarded the Hero of the Match for his goals and overall performance in this game.

Bengaluru FC and Chennaiyin FC face each other in the branded “Cauvery” derby as both teams look to revive their push for a top 4 finish to the ISL season. While Bengaluru won with an impressive performance last time out against SC East Bengal, the worrying signs for Chennaiyin FC continued after another disappointing performance against Hyderabad in their previous game. The match will be LIVE on Star Sports 2 and Hotstar at 7:30 pm on 5th February 2021.
