ISL Update: Bengaluru Chennaiyin ends in a stalemate, ATK Mohun Bagan look to reduce the gap to the top

Bengaluru and Chennai, two cities with an amazing sporting rivalry were represented by their clubs in an important clash to keep their ISL playoff hopes alive. Bengaluru FC did start the day ahead of Chennaiyin FC in the ISL points table but the game was always going to be an even contest. The game ended in a 0-0 stalemate as both teams were unable to be creative in the final third and be clinical on those rare occasions.

Chennaiyin started the game brightly with Isma and Chhangte creating early chances in the first 15 minutes but were unable to genuinely worry Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s goal. Chennaiyin dominated the possession in the first half but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Sunil Chhetri also had a good opportunity in the first half but Eli Sabia ensured that the Bengaluru captain didn’t end up on the scoresheet.

Gurpreet made some cracking saves early on in the second half to deny the Chennaiyin early onslaught in the second half. Bengaluru FC’s Fran Gonzalez did find the back of the net on a set-piece, but the officials judged him to be offside and thus denied them the opening goal in the match. Memo came extremely close with his brilliant pile-driver but the post denied the Brazilian. The match ended in a 0-0 draw as Chennaiyin will be disappointed and Bengaluru with be elated with the point that they earned.

“We have been very unlucky in the goalscoring department. If we got the three points, we could have closed the gap. But I don’t want to give up because we have four games. If our performance remains the same, then maybe the football gods will help us score the goals,” Chennaiyin manager Laszlo quoted at the post-match press conference.

Bengaluru FC interim manager Naushad Moosa said “We were lucky. They got a lot of scoring opportunities that they missed. The way we played in the first half was not how we wanted to play… It is nice to have a clean sheet but the way that the things are on the points table, it was very important for us to get the three points.”

ATK Mohun Bagan will take on Odisha FC who saw Stuart Baxter sacked after his abysmal comments at the end of their game in the post-match presser against Jamshedpur. Roy Krishna and co. will be key to reduce the gap at the top of the league to only 3 points before Mumbai City FC play their next game. ATKMB vs Odisha will be live at 7:30 pm IST on 6th February 2021 on Star Sports 2 and Hotstar
