Australian Open 2021 – Day 1: Djokovic, Thiem, Serena and Osaka register wins on opening day

The first tennis grand slam tournament of the year 2021, Australian Open has started off after being delayed by three weeks considering the safety of all the players and will go on for the next 13 days.

Day 1 kicked off on time under leaden skies at Melbourne Park on Monday with Thiem, Serena, Djokovic, and Osaka in the showdown.

DJOKOVIC SERVES UP MASTERCLASS

On the opening round day, Novak Djokovic got back with the best of his capabilities and showed his class on Monday. Djokovic has conquered Jeremy Chardy with 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

“I’ve been lucky to have so much success on this court and hopefully it will continue for many years. It makes my heart full to see so many people in the stadium. This is the most people I’ve seen on a tennis court in 12 months. Thank you.” Djokovic said in post-match presentation.

SERENA EASES INTO SECOND ROUND

Serena Williams, who is playing her 100th match for Australian Open eased past Germany’s Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-1 to reach the second round within one hour.

U.S. OPEN CHAMPION NAOMI OSAKA THROUGH

Third seed Naomi Osaka was the first player from women’s singles who is heading into the second round after a 6-1 6-2 thrashing of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Post match she also thanked to fans at Rod Laver Arena

“I’m just really happy to see people in the stands. It’s been a bit lonely in New York, so thank you guys.”

 

HALEP WINS IN STRAIGHT SETS

Women’s singles World number two Simona Halep, two –time grand slam winner has sealed a comfortable 6-2 6-1 victory over Australian wild card Lizette Cabrera in the first round at the Rod Laver Arena.

During match her lower back injury has bothered her as to required strapping despite she headed to second set and won match at Rod Laver Arena.

 

THIEM BEATS KUKUSHKIN IN STRAIGHT SET

Dominic Thiem currently world number 3 has  advanced to next round with a 7-6(2) 6-2 6-3 win over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. The Austrian third seed Thiem hit 29 winners compared to 17 from Kukushkin, who is ranked 90th.

 

ZVEREV WOBBLES BUT FIGHTS BACK

Sixth seed Alexander Zverev recovered from a slow start to beat American Marcos Giron 6-7(8) 7-6(5) 6-3 6-2 on Margaret Court Arena with hitting 50 winners and 16 aces to reach the second round.

Earlier in the day, Venus Williams and French Open champion Iga Swiatek won their respective matches and sailed through to the second round.

The biggest upset of the day by Gael Monflis, French 10th seeded was knocked out by the World No. 86 Emil Ruusuvuori, from Finland in the first round of the match.

At first day, Bianca Andreescu, former US open champion was also in tear after a well-fought three-set victory over Mihaela Buzarnescu in the Australian Open. It’s look inspiring as Bianca has return on court after one year due to Injury.
