ISL Update: ATK Mohun Bagan beat Bengaluru FC 2-0 thanks to Krishna and Marcelinho

ATK Mohun Bagan pulled off a comprehensive victory over Bengaluru FC with two first-half goals, a penalty from Roy Krishna and a stunning free-kick from Marcelinho to seal the win. This victory meant that ATK Mohun Bagan now are only 1 point below Mumbai City FC at the top of the ISL table.

ATK Mohun Bagan started the game positively with Roy Krishna, Manvir and Marcelinho being a difficult task to handle for Bengaluru FC. Marcelinho and Krishna tested the BFC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu a couple of times in the first 15 minutes of the game to set the tone for ATKMB. McHugh also tested Sandhu from long range.

It was in the 37th minute that the deadline was broken from the penalty spot by Roy Krishna after he was fouled by Pratik Chaudhari in the box. On the cusp of half time, Marcelinho took a stunning curling freekick to score and double ATK Mohun Bagan’s advantage. The Mariners had a comfortable lead at the break. This was Marcelinho scoring his second goal for the club in only his third appearance since signing from Odisha FC in January.

The second half started in a similar vein as ATK Mohun Bagan started dominating the ball and the creative aspect of the game. Sandesh Jhingan forced a save of a corner from Gurpreet while Manvir hit a couple of well-improvised shots only to be denied by the BFC goalkeeper.

Marcelinho and Roy Krishna along with Manvir kept troubling the Bengaluru defense but the Blues could only muster one decent attempt on goal when a long-range shot of Sunil Chhetri was comfortably saved by Arindam Bhattacharja. Bengaluru FC did try pushing for the goal but ATK Mohun Bagan stood firm and the game ended 2-0 with all three points to ATKMB. Marcelinho was awarded the Hero of the Match while the DHL Winning Pass of the Match was awarded to Roy Krishna.

Chennaiyin FC plays Jamshedpur FC at the GMC Bambolim Stadium at 7:30 pm IST on 10th February 2021. The match will be telecasted in India on Star Sports 2 and Hotstar. With both teams trying to keep their hopes for the playoffs alive, this should be another cracking fixture in the Hero ISL.
